{"id":178306,"date":"2022-04-16T04:06:22","date_gmt":"2022-04-16T03:06:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=178306"},"modified":"2022-04-16T04:06:22","modified_gmt":"2022-04-16T03:06:22","slug":"24-year-old-widow-accuses-in-laws-of-seizing-husbands-property-in-lagos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/16\/24-year-old-widow-accuses-in-laws-of-seizing-husbands-property-in-lagos\/","title":{"rendered":"24-year-old widow accuses in-laws of seizing husband\u2019s property in Lagos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Twenty-four-year-old widow, Joy Arinze, has accused her in-laws of hijacking her late husband\u2019s property and denying her access to a piece of land the deceased bought in the Ikorodu area of Lagos before he died.<\/p>\n<p>The widow alleged that her in-laws accused her of killing her husband, Arinze Okoye, who hailed from Abam Azia in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State and made her swear an oath.<\/p>\n<p>The mother of two also lamented that their action had affected her upkeep and that of her children, aged two and four.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with PUNCH, she said Arinze was returning home from the Ketu area of Lagos where he ran a boutique in June 2021 when he was attacked and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/08\/nigerian-man-allegedly-stabbed-to-death-by-lover-in-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stabbed<\/a> in the neck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband died in June last year. He was returning from Ketu where his shop was in the evening of that day. I called my brother-in-law, Kingsley Okoye, but he did not pick up. My elder sister later called to tell me that a man picked up my husband\u2019s call and introduced himself as a divisional police officer and said my husband\u2019s relatives should go to the nearest police station at Irawo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told my husband was stabbed in the neck. I did not follow him to the market on the day he was killed; I was at home. Some people who came to console me said they saw him bleeding and asking for help. The DPO told me that my husband died before the police got to the scene,\u201d Joy said.<\/p>\n<p>Alleging that she was made to swear an oath to clear her name in the death of her husband, she said that she reported the matter at the Ketu Police Station in the company with a non-governmental organisation, Esther Child Rights Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know why my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/24\/widow-of-man-who-drowned-saving-lives-speaks-on-in-laws-threat-over-wikes-yet-to-be-fulfilled-n50m-promise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in-laws<\/a> are against me. My husband had two shops where he sold men\u2019s clothing; one of them was in Ketu Ikosi. Some thieves burgled one of his shops and stole his goods and that affected him financially. My husband had a piece of land in Ikorodu but they sold it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to swear. His sisters accused me of killing my husband. I want my husband\u2019s elder brother to return the land, the shop, and the items in it to me. He also threatened to deal with me mercilessly. I am currently living with a friend and rely on the help I receive from people to feed. My children are with my mother in the village,\u201d Joy said.<\/p>\n<p>The founder of ECRF, Esther Ogwu, said the NGO was working to help the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/13\/seven-remanded-for-stripping-anambra-widow-naked-over-adultery-cp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">widow<\/a> get justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer husband\u2019s brother collected everything from her and she has two kids. I have reported the case at Ketu Police Station. We want the lady to get justice and everything that belongs to her husband,\u201d Ogwu added.<\/p>\n<p>Okoye, however, denied the allegations, stating that the issue was a family matter and had been resolved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have never done anything like that (threatening her) and I don\u2019t have a problem with her. I did not sell anything. This is a family issue. The matter is still with the police.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if Joy was made to swear an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/03\/we-swore-an-oath-to-die-mysteriously-if-we-disobeyed-kanu-ipob-members-confess\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oath<\/a> over her husband\u2019s death, he said, \u201cWe don\u2019t have anything like that. That is why I am saying that it involves her family and my family. The matter has been resolved. I can\u2019t say everything on it. Just know that I don\u2019t have any problem with her,\u201d Okoye added.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the case was under investigation. \u201cI can confirm it was reported.
