{"id":182767,"date":"2022-04-25T12:28:23","date_gmt":"2022-04-25T11:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=182767"},"modified":"2022-04-25T12:28:23","modified_gmt":"2022-04-25T11:28:23","slug":"imo-explosion-death-toll-rises-to-110-nema-plans-mass-burial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/25\/imo-explosion-death-toll-rises-to-110-nema-plans-mass-burial\/","title":{"rendered":"Imo explosion: Death toll rises to 110, NEMA plans mass burial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says plans are in top gear for mass burial of victims of illegal refinery explosion in Abaeze community Ohaji\/Egbema Local Government of Imo.<\/p>\n<p>This is as the agency disclosed that the death toll has now hit 110.<\/p>\n<p>Acting head of the Imo\/Abia operations office of the agency, Ifeanyi Nnaji, made this known while addressing newsmen.<\/p>\n<p>He disclosed that more dead bodies were recovered in Orashi River, near the scene on Sunday, while some died at various hospitals to increase the total casualty figure so far.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency workers in Imo, led by MNnaji, had been on the ground since the incident to carry out rescue operations and evacuate dead bodies.<\/p>\n<p>An illegal refinery situated at the Abaeze forest in Ohaji\/Egbema local government <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/23\/breaking-fire-breaks-out-at-illegal-bunkering-site-in-imo-hundred-feared-dead\/\">exploded on Saturday and killed no fewer than 100 people<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Nnaji said the agency had yet to figure out what led to the fire disaster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who should tell the story and give insight into the incident are all dead. We are still on the ground. We will soon come out with a report on the incident,\u201d stated the NEMA head.<\/p>\n<p>Nnaji further appealed to the government to create an enabling environment for genuine business to flourish within the oil-producing communities in Imo to discourage youths from engaging in illegal activities.<\/p>\n<p>He also appealed to oil companies in the area to assist the government in job creation for their host communities<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says plans are in top gear for mass burial of victims of illegal refinery explosion in Abaeze community Ohaji\/Egbema Local Government of Imo.
