{"id":186888,"date":"2022-05-11T07:15:24","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T06:15:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=186888"},"modified":"2022-05-11T07:15:24","modified_gmt":"2022-05-11T06:15:24","slug":"firs-calls-for-increased-collaboration-among-african-countries-to-tax-digital-businesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/05\/11\/firs-calls-for-increased-collaboration-among-african-countries-to-tax-digital-businesses\/","title":{"rendered":"FIRS calls for increased collaboration among African countries to tax digital businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Executive chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Muhammad Nami has demanded for improved collaboration among African countries to effectively tax digital economy.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by Johannes Wojuola, media aide to the FIRS chairman, Nami.<\/p>\n<p>Nami said this at a technical assistance programme organised by African Tax Administrators\u2019 Forum (ATAF) held in Lom\u00e9, Togo.<\/p>\n<p>Wojuola quoted Nami as saying that some African countries had endorsed the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) inclusive framework\u2019s global solution to the tax challenges of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/28\/imf-to-nigeria-others-take-advantage-of-personal-income-tax\/\">digitalised economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur analysis continues to show that the possible cost of administering and implementing the complex rules will far outweigh the expected revenue accruing from its implementation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI, therefore, urge the African Tax Administrators Forum (ATAF) to join the discussion at the UN Tax Committee of Experts, South Centre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe forum should also collaborate with all other well-meaning stakeholders to explore alternative rules that will enable African countries to effectively subject the digital businesses and base eroding payments to tax in our jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese collaborations should extend to other rules developed and implemented at international level for the taxation of multinational enterprises, such as the tax treaty, exchange of information and transfer pricing rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cATAF should collaborate with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to explore opportunities for Africa within the programme\u2019s tax for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should also ensure that African countries are able to generate appreciable revenue to fund SDGs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FIRS chairman emphasised the need for capacity building for members in respect of base erosion and profit shifting actions by multi-national corporations and on taxation of the digital economy.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, Nigeria continues to hold the view that the outcome will produce very minimal revenue comfort for African counties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is instructive, considering the implementation challenges that developing jurisdictions will face due to the complexity of the Pillars I and II rules,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is crucial for the ATAF technical assistance to look toward improving the capacity of member-countries\u2019 tax administration through the digitisation of operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nami further urged ATAF to organise peer-to-peer knowledge sharing sessions between beneficiaries of the technical assistance programmes and intensify technical assistance on international tax rules, particularly in the areas of tax treaties, transfer pricing and exchange of information.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Executive chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Muhammad Nami has demanded for improved collaboration among African countries to effectively tax digital economy.
