{"id":188082,"date":"2022-05-16T05:50:44","date_gmt":"2022-05-16T04:50:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=188082"},"modified":"2022-05-16T05:50:44","modified_gmt":"2022-05-16T04:50:44","slug":"nwajiuba-apologises-for-asuu-strike-says-his-children-are-also-affected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/05\/16\/nwajiuba-apologises-for-asuu-strike-says-his-children-are-also-affected\/","title":{"rendered":"Nwajiuba apologises for ASUU strike, says his children are also affected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former minister of state for education, Chukwuemeka Nwajuiba has apologised to Nigerian students over the protracted strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the union recently extended the imdustrial action by another 12 weeks, citing a lack of readiness by concerned officials to resolve the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the issue, the presidential hopeful of the All Progressives Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/05\/15\/apcll-field-best-candidates-for-2023-elections-says-adamu\/\">(APC)<\/a> said all his children attended public universities, and that two of them are also affected by the strike.<\/p>\n<p>This was made known on Sunday by Nwajuiba\u00a0while being interviewed on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme.<\/p>\n<p>Nwajiuba said he shares in the responsibility for the situation, but noted that strikes are not the best approach for ASUU to address its grievances.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cI do apologise to Nigerian students because as their minister, I will take responsibility. But also, on behalf of the federal government, I would say \u2018please understand what the issues are\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll my four children have passed through Nigerian universities. I still have two who are at home now, because they are all in public universities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nwajiuba said he is also a product of public universities, hence, he empathises with ASUU.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cMy position has not been that ASUU is talking rubbish. ASUU has a case, they are not making a case for themselves alone. ASUU is making a case for the entire university system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only point of departure is that we have asked ASUU that strikes can\u2019t cure the problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need them in class, we need our children back in school. It hurts parents. It hurts us. Like I keep saying, my children are here, I don\u2019t have children in private universities. My wife and them are battling it at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nwajiuba also appealed to ASUU to \u201cconsider leaving the option of strike and work with the government\u201d, adding that the issues cannot be solved \u201cat once\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis government has done more than any other government to meet ASUU. We are going to resolve the issue.
