{"id":190518,"date":"2022-05-25T07:17:51","date_gmt":"2022-05-25T06:17:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=190518"},"modified":"2022-05-25T07:17:51","modified_gmt":"2022-05-25T06:17:51","slug":"inec-tax-clearance-not-complusory-for-candidates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/05\/25\/inec-tax-clearance-not-complusory-for-candidates\/","title":{"rendered":"INEC: Tax clearance not complusory for candidates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday has disclosed that it\u00a0would collaborate with anti-graft agencies to prosecute candidates of political parties possessing forged academic credentials in the 2023 general election.<\/p>\n<p>Such collaboration, the commission said, would involve the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other-Related Offences Commission and the Code of Conduct Bureau.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/05\/23\/presidential-ambition-emefiele-withdraws-suit-against-inec-agf\/\">INEC<\/a> also clarified that there is no specific law that makes it mandatory for electoral candidates to present evidence of tax payment before they could contest election.<\/p>\n<p>These were made known by the chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu in Abuja during a meeting on the collaboration for Effective Tax Compliance of Political Office Holders, convened at the instance of the Joint Tax Board.<\/p>\n<p>Other agencies that were represented at the meeting included the Chief Executive Officers of the Federal Inland Revenue Service and the Code of Conduct Bureau.<\/p>\n<p>Yakubu said that beyond the nullification of elections of candidates that submitted fake or forged credentials, he believed that such individuals should be prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cWe are already collaborating with the ICPC which is prosecuting candidates who submitted fake or forged academic credentials to INEC, as a result of which elections were nullified by the Election Petition Tribunals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeyond the nullification of elections, such persons should be prosecuted. And I am happy that the ICPC is handling that responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me assure you that INEC is in collaboration with the ICPC, Code of Conduct Bureau in our efforts to make Nigeria a better place and to ensure that persons who are elected comply with the laws of the land and are suitably qualified to hold the public trust.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigeria must be a democratic nation for all and not just a plutocracy for a few people, who end up evading taxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I want to thank you and be rest assured of our willingness to collaborate with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yakubu said there was no specific law that made it mandatory for candidates for election to present evidence of tax payment before they could contest election.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, pledged INEC\u2019s commitment to relevant agencies, to ensure that public office holders complied with the country\u2019s constitution and relevant laws, including tax.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we understand the importance of this collaboration and we will collaborate with you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll candidates for elected offices are required to complete the INEC nomination forms and to swear to an affidavit that they have fully and faithfully provided the requisite information to the commission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will collaborate with sister agencies to provide whatever information you require to facilitate your constitutional roles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeadership comes with enormous responsibilities, at both the executive and legislative levels and persons entrusted with that responsibility must respect the constitution and laws of this country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why agencies responsible for ensuring compliance with the constitution and laws of this government just like INEC, have fully supported us,\u201d the INEC boss emphasized.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday has disclosed that it\u00a0would collaborate with anti-graft agencies to prosecute candidates of political parties possessing forged academic credentials in the 2023 general election.
