{"id":190834,"date":"2022-05-26T08:10:33","date_gmt":"2022-05-26T07:10:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=190834"},"modified":"2022-05-26T08:10:33","modified_gmt":"2022-05-26T07:10:33","slug":"senegal-hospital-fire-11-newborn-babies-die-in-tivaouane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/05\/26\/senegal-hospital-fire-11-newborn-babies-die-in-tivaouane\/","title":{"rendered":"Senegal hospital fire: 11 newborn babies die in Tivaouane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Macky Sall of Senegal confirmed that 11 newborn babies died in a horrific fire at a regional hospital&#8217;s neonatal section.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital is located in Tivaouane, about 120 kilometers (74.56 miles) east of Dakar, the capital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have just learned with pain and consternation the death of 11 newborn babies in the fire that occurred in the neonatology department of the Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh hospital in Tivaouane,\u201d Sall said in a tweet without giving further details about the fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo their mothers and their families, I express my deepest sympathy,\u201d Sall, who is on a state visit in Angola, added.<\/p>\n<p>Senegal\u2019s health minister, Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr, said on private Senegalese television TFM that \u201caccording to preliminary investigation, a short circuit triggered the fire\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Sarr, who is in Geneva for the World Health Assembly, said he would cut short the trip and return to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/03\/senegal-seeks-partnership-with-nigeria-to-develop-its-petroleum-sector\/\">Senegal immediately<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Demba Diop Sy, the mayor of Tivaouane, one of Senegal\u2019s holy cities and a transport hub, said police and fire service were still at the hospital, but did not provide further details.<\/p>\n<p>The tragedy was caused by a short circuit.
