{"id":192560,"date":"2022-06-01T13:41:01","date_gmt":"2022-06-01T12:41:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=192560"},"modified":"2022-06-01T13:41:01","modified_gmt":"2022-06-01T12:41:01","slug":"u-s-investment-firm-redbird-capital-buys-ac-milan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/01\/u-s-investment-firm-redbird-capital-buys-ac-milan\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. investment firm RedBird Capital buys AC Milan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RedBird Capital Partners, a US investment firm, has agreed to buy Italian soccer champions AC Milan for 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion).<\/p>\n<p>The new owners have set the goal: AC Milan must once again compete with the best in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Current owners Elliott, a private equity firm based in the United States, will keep a minority stake in the club and seats on the board, according to the club&#8217;s announcement on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in 11 years, Milan has won the Italian Serie A league title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2026 are excited to play a role in the club\u2019s next chapter as it returns to its rightful place at the very top of Italian, European and world football,\u201d RedBird founder and managing partner Gerry Cardinale said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>RedBird is already an investor in Fenway Sports Group, the owner of Liverpool and the Boston Red Sox baseball team. RedBird also has a controlling stake in French soccer club Toulouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRedBird\u2019s investment philosophy and track record in team ownership has shown that football clubs can be successful on the pitch and sustainable off it,\u201d Cardinale added.<\/p>\n<p>Italian soccer clubs have recently become a popular target for overseas investors, attracted by cheaper valuations compared with those of England\u2019s Premier League and rivals in major European leagues.<\/p>\n<p>Milan were a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/19\/man-united-beat-ac-milan-to-progress-in-europa\/\">dominant force in European soccer<\/a> under the previous ownership of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi but won the Champions League for the last time in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>The transition to new ownership will take place over the summer, with an expected closing of the deal no later than September, the club statement added.<\/p>\n<p>Milan, European Cup winners seven times, will be looking to strengthen their ranks during the close season to help defend their Italian league title and mount a challenge in the Champions League.<\/p>\n<p>Elliott took over the club in 2018 when Chinese businessman Li Yonghong failed to meet some obligations linked to a financing package for the purchase of the team from Berlusconi the year before.<\/p>\n<p>Elliott said its continued involvement reflected its confidence in RedBird and added that the club leadership would remain in place.<\/p>\n<p>Former Arsenal executive Ivan Gazidis is the club\u2019s CEO while former player Paolo Maldini serves as technical director.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RedBird Capital Partners, a US investment firm, has agreed to buy Italian soccer champions AC Milan for 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion).
