The Nigerian Army (NA) has responded to allegations that its men have a hand in the perennial security crisis bedeviling the nation. <\/p>\n

Methodist Church of Nigeria Prelate, Samuel Kanu, who was kidnapped and released last weekend, had alleged that his kidnappers are working in cahoots with men of the Nigerian army. <\/p>\n

But in a statement on Wednesday by Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the army exonerated its men from the incident. <\/p>\n

The Army <\/a>said no formal complaint has been received by the unit, adding that it was worrisome that ransom was paid in less than 24 hours.<\/p>\n

The spokesman said while the Army shares the pains of victims of heinous crimes, linking soldiers without investigations \u201ccannot be swallowed hook line and sinker\u201d.<\/p>\n

Nwachukwu raised some \u201cpertinent questions\u201d which according to him \u201care still unanswered\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven, the spate of insecurity in the region, the question would be, was the issue reported to the unit covering the area?\u201d, he quipped.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid the Methodist Church take the NA into confidence while negotiating the ransom with the kidnappers?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWas the ransom paid to troops? These are questions that beg for answers\u201d, Nwachukwu further asked.<\/p>\n

The Army disclosed that it was yet to receive any debrief from the Prelate or the Methodist Church.<\/p>\n

It said troops deployed at the Forward Operating Base(FOB) Okigwe, Abia State University Uturu and the 14 Brigade got no information about the abduction.<\/p>\n

Nwachukwu told the public that deployment is not done with consideration for ethnic affiliation.<\/p>\n

\u201cHence a deployment of troops of Fulani ethnic extraction who as alleged by the Prelate, carried out the dastardly act is not our practice or modus operandi in the NA.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Army stressed its zero tolerance for any misconduct and promised to take the weighty allegation seriously by approaching the Prelate and the Methodist Church.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
