{"id":193266,"date":"2022-06-04T12:14:44","date_gmt":"2022-06-04T11:14:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=193266"},"modified":"2022-06-04T12:14:44","modified_gmt":"2022-06-04T11:14:44","slug":"british-man-arrested-in-dubai-over-1-3b-tax-fraud-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/04\/british-man-arrested-in-dubai-over-1-3b-tax-fraud-case\/","title":{"rendered":"British man arrested in Dubai over \u00a31.3b tax fraud case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>British national, Sanjay Shah has been arrested by the police over a \u00a31.3billion ($1.7bn) tax fraud case in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n<p>The officers working with Interpol say they plan to extradite the suspect, identified as Sanjay Shah, 52, who is wanted in Denmark over fraud allegations.<\/p>\n<p>Shah founded Solo Capital, a hedge fund firm which closed in 2016, and Autism Rocks, a charitable organization that raises awareness for autism.<\/p>\n<p>He was detained after Denmark signed an agreement in March to allow for extradition of alleged criminals to and from the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n<p>He is accused of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/05\/25\/anti-graft-agency-efcc-arraigns-british-national-in-abuja-for-n151million-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fraud<\/a> relating to foreign businesses pretending to own shares in Danish companies \u2013 then claim tax refunds for which they were not eligible, according to a statement from Dubai police Brigadier General, Jamal Al Jallaf.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-193272 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/06\/kunlenet07\/2022\/06\/04\/British-national-Sanjay-Shah-2-.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/06\/kunlenet07\/2022\/06\/04\/British-national-Sanjay-Shah-2-.jpeg 1080w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/06\/kunlenet07\/2022\/06\/04\/British-national-Sanjay-Shah-2--212x300.jpeg 212w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/06\/kunlenet07\/2022\/06\/04\/British-national-Sanjay-Shah-2--725x1024.jpeg 725w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/06\/kunlenet07\/2022\/06\/04\/British-national-Sanjay-Shah-2--768x1084.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2018The fraud scheme, known as `cum-ex\u2019 trading, involved submitting thousands of applications to the Danish Treasury on behalf of investors and companies from several countries around the world in order to receive dividend tax refunds,\u2019 Al Jallaf said.<\/p>\n<p>Shah had been chased by prosecutors in Denmark since 2015, after the Danish treasury was cheated out of a \u2018staggering amount\u2019 of money, Justice Minister Mattias Tesfaye said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It should not be possible for suspected perpetrators to hide in the Middle East and thus avoid being held accountable in a Danish courtroom,\u2019 Tesfaye added.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Now I am awaiting the legal process in the United Arab Emirates, and crossing my fingers that it will end up that we can get Sanjay Shah on a plane to Denmark, so he can be prosecuted in this country.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Shah, who has spent the past few years living in Dubai, says he is innocent of the allegations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>British national, Sanjay Shah has been arrested by the police over a \u00a31.3billion ($1.7bn) tax fraud case in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
