{"id":195130,"date":"2022-06-10T14:40:02","date_gmt":"2022-06-10T13:40:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=195130"},"modified":"2022-06-10T14:40:02","modified_gmt":"2022-06-10T13:40:02","slug":"court-acquits-ex-ppmc-mds-wife-of-money-laundering-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/10\/court-acquits-ex-ppmc-mds-wife-of-money-laundering-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Court acquits ex-PPMC MD\u2019s wife of money laundering charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A federal high court in Abuja has discharged and acquitted Ochuko, wife of Haruna Momoh, of money laundering charges.<\/p>\n<p>Haruna Momoh is a former managing director of the Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC).<\/p>\n<p>He was accused to have allegedly siphoned funds belonging to the agency through his wife.<\/p>\n<p>Also acquitted at the court\u2019s sitting on Thursday are Blessing Azuka-Agozi, StanbicIBTC Bank Plc, Energopol Nigeria Limited, Blaid Construction Limited, and Blaid Farms Limited.<\/p>\n<p>They were being arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/30\/102-year-old-presidential-aspirant-to-efcc-icpc-arrest-politician-buying-n100m-forms\/\">(ICPC)<\/a> on a 22-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering running into billions of naira.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwo Taiwo, the presiding judge, held that the prosecution failed to prove its allegations against the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt.<\/p>\n<p>He ruled that the case of the prosecution was unreliable because it was built on mere speculation and conjecture.<\/p>\n<p>The court ordered that Momoh\u2019s bank accounts as well as that of her two companies \u2014 Blaid Construction and Blaid Farms \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecable.ng\/icpc-seeking-cheap-publicity-lawyer-kicks-over-forfeiture-order-against-ex-ppmc-mds-wife\/amp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>frozen<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0as a result of the case, be immediately unfrozen, \u201cupon service\u201d of the judgment on the plaintiff and the affected banks.<\/p>\n<p>The court also ordered the prosecution to immediately unseal all properties both immovable and movable, belonging to Momoh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the final analysis, the case of the prosecution was entirely based on suspicion, without any reliable ground,\u201d Taiwo said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe investigation allegedly carried out was without merit and unable to establish the allegations against the defendants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis court holds that it will only rely on probable facts and not suspicion and conjecture as presented by the prosecution in this case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe law remains trite that doubts arising from criminal proceedings must be resolved in favour of the defendant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsequently, the prosecution, having failed to discharge its onerous duty of proving the 22-count charge against the defendants beyond reasonable doubt, the defendants are hereby discharged and acquitted of all counts of the charge.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A federal high court in Abuja has discharged and acquitted Ochuko, wife of Haruna Momoh, of money laundering charges.
