{"id":197592,"date":"2022-06-20T18:32:46","date_gmt":"2022-06-20T17:32:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=197592"},"modified":"2022-06-20T18:34:54","modified_gmt":"2022-06-20T17:34:54","slug":"2023-our-constitution-does-not-recognise-placeholder-inec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/20\/2023-our-constitution-does-not-recognise-placeholder-inec\/","title":{"rendered":"2023: Our constitution does not recognise &#8216;placeholder&#8217; \u2013 INEC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said the concept of \u201cplaceholder\u201d is not enshrined in its constitution. <\/p>\n<p>INEC\u2019s Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye, made this known on Monday during an interview on ARISE TV. <\/p>\n<p>In order to beat the deadline, some parties submitted names of vice-presidential candidates whom they described as placeholders.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/18\/tinubu-still-searching-for-running-mate-will-substitute-masari-campaign-spokesman\/\">Kabiru Masari,<\/a> a politician from Katsina, was named as the running mate to Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), but some political analysts had said the APC welfare secretary is a \u201cplaceholder\u201d before a final candidate is named.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to the development, Okoye said the \u201cplaceholder is a unique Nigerian invention\u201d for which the commission\u2019s law has no provision.<\/p>\n<p>Okoye said, \u201cThe constitution makes it very clear that you cannot run alone as a presidential candidate and must nominate an associate to run with you for that position, and as far as INEC is concerned, the presidential candidates have submitted their associates to run with them in the presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as we are concerned, there\u2019s no form submitted by the presidential candidate where they said \u2018we\u2019re submitting this person\u2019s name as a place or space holder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issue of space or place holder is a unique Nigerian invention that has no place in our constitutional and legal framework.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolitical parties\u2019 candidates have submitted names of associates to run with them, and that is the position of the law as at today and nothing has changed. For there to be a substitution of a candidate, the vice-presidential candidate must write to INEC, with a sworn affidavit stating that he is withdrawing from the race within the time frame provided by the law.
