{"id":198326,"date":"2022-06-23T09:10:05","date_gmt":"2022-06-23T08:10:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=198326"},"modified":"2022-06-23T09:10:05","modified_gmt":"2022-06-23T08:10:05","slug":"phase-out-petrol-subsidy-to-tackle-supply-deficiencies-oil-marketers-tell-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/23\/phase-out-petrol-subsidy-to-tackle-supply-deficiencies-oil-marketers-tell-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"Phase out petrol subsidy to tackle supply deficiencies, Oil marketers tell FG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) has called for a gradual price deregulation to tackle deficiencies in the supply of premium motor spirit (PMS).<\/p>\n<p>Petrol price is currently regulated in Nigeria and the government is expected to make up for a shortfall of about N4 trillion, known as petrol subsidy.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of MOMAN, Olumide Adeosun via a media<span class=\"acssf62a8\"> briefing on Wednesday <\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">said\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">the current supply framework cannot guarantee steady\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">supplies to the country given the current state of government finances and unpredictable international supply shortages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cWe, therefore, recommend a gradual price deregulation with targeted palliatives (eg. transport and agricultural subsidies) to the public to ease implementation,\u201d Adeosun said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">MOMAN said t<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">he current scarcity of petrol is occasioned by supply inadequacy in the last few weeks and distribution challenges created by the unavailability and continuous surge in international prices of automotive gas oil (diesel)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">It added that its members were working with \u201cthe authority, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/09\/nnpc-twitter-handle-shockingly-predicts-tinubus-running-mate\/\">NNPC<\/a>\/PPMC, NARTO and other<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">industry stakeholders to make petrol available at the pumps and eliminate\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">the queues as quickly as possible\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">However, in the meantime, it recommended that the \u201ccurrent single supplier strategy be reviewed\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cThe federal ministry of petroleum resources, in collaboration with the ministry of f<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">inance and other relevant MDAs, should set up a taskforce to immediately focus\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">on increasing diesel supply through accelerated initiatives to increase local\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">modular refining capacity,\u201d MOMAN said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cThis move will tackle the supply and distribution c<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">hallenges.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">The association also called for the phased rehabilitation of existing NNPC refineries to hasten the supply of middle\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">distillates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cMOMAN recognizes and closely associates with the need to ease challenges with respect\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">to high energy and transportation costs occasioned by extraneous circumstances,\u201d the oil marketers said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cMOMAN shall continually do its best to distribute petrol to its customers across the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">country and keep exploring opportunities to partner with industry stakeholders, the authority, and the government to ensure the sustainability and institutionalisation of a viable petroleum downstream sector in Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cThe full deregulation of the petroleum downstream sector and full implementation of the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 clearly remains the most viable long-term solution to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">the country\u2019s supply and distribution challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">Meanwhile, Adeosun also said the oil marketers were in talks with Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC) for the provision of diesel to transporters to allow for efficient distribution of petrol from depots \u201cto hinterlands and our stations\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) has called for a gradual price deregulation to tackle deficiencies in the supply of premium motor spirit (PMS).
