{"id":198455,"date":"2022-06-23T16:38:54","date_gmt":"2022-06-23T15:38:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=198455"},"modified":"2022-06-23T16:38:54","modified_gmt":"2022-06-23T15:38:54","slug":"update-ekweremadu-denied-bail-in-alleged-slavery-child-trafficking-organ-harvesting-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/23\/update-ekweremadu-denied-bail-in-alleged-slavery-child-trafficking-organ-harvesting-case\/","title":{"rendered":"UPDATE: Ekweremadu denied bail in alleged slavery, child trafficking, organ harvesting case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice have been reportedly denied bail in alleged slavery, child trafficking and organ harvesting case.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA had earlier reported that the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/23\/breaking-uk-police-detain-ekweremadu-wife\/\">Specialist Crime Team of the Metropolitan Police<\/a><\/strong> in London has detained a former Senate Deputy President Dr. Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice.<\/p>\n<p>It was also reliably gathered that the case which was presented before a UK court has been\u00a0adjourned to July 7.<\/p>\n<p>According to report,\u00a0the said child, whose identity was not disclosed, is reportedly with the Metropolitan Police, while the suspects are currently in custody pending a few hours when they would be arraigned at Uxbridge Magistrates\u2019 Court.<\/p>\n<p>The Metropolitan Police via a statement said: \u201cA woman and a man were charged today with conspiring to arrange the travel of a child into the UK in order to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/13\/nigerian-security-agencies-ebubeagu-behind-kidnapping-killing-harvesting-of-organs-in-southeast-ipob\/\">harvest organs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-add-marked=\"true\">\u201cThe charges follow an investigation by the Metropolitan Police\u2019s Specialist Crime team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[A] Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55 (10.9.66) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange\/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[B] Ike Ekweremadu, 60 (12.05.62) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange\/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pre-ads-el\" data-add-marked=\"true\">\u201cThey have both been remanded in custody and will appear at Uxbridge Magistrates\u2019 Court later today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022. A child has been safeguarded and we are working closely with partners on continued support. As criminal proceedings are now under way we will not be providing further details.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pre-ads-el\" data-add-marked=\"true\">The suspect shares the same name with former Deputy Senate President.
