{"id":198595,"date":"2022-06-24T07:57:38","date_gmt":"2022-06-24T06:57:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=198595"},"modified":"2022-06-24T07:57:38","modified_gmt":"2022-06-24T06:57:38","slug":"afdb-africa-must-end-dependence-on-food-medicine-imports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/24\/afdb-africa-must-end-dependence-on-food-medicine-imports\/","title":{"rendered":"AfDB: Africa must end dependence on food, medicine imports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina has stated that Africa must end dependence on the importation of food and medicine.<\/p>\n<p>This was made known by Adesina<span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u00a0in an interview with Reuters on the sidelines of the <\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">2022 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM)\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">in Kigali, Rwanda.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">His statement comes as many countries are experiencing rising inflation and food shortages aggravated by the war in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/23\/ukraine-to-begin-first-trial-of-russian-soldier-accused-of-rape\/\">Ukraine<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cAfrica should not allow itself to be vulnerable in excessively depending on others, whether it is for vaccines or whether it is for food,\u201d Reuters quoted the AfDB president as saying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cThe fact is that when you are dependent on others, you are also very highly vulnerable to any shock of any kind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">Last month, AfDB had approved a<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u00a0$1.5 billion financing facility for emergency food production, with the aim of averting a looming food crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">The bank said the funds were meant to help 20 million farmers produce 38 million tonnes of food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">Adesina said the bank had already received requests from countries to draw on the fund.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cOnce those things come to our board, they are swiftly reviewed and approved, and the money is out at the door,\u201d he had said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">Meanwhile, the AfDB\u2019s board, approved the creation of a new Africa pharmaceutical technology foundation during the week, Adeshina said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">According to him, the foundation would allow Africa to leverage intellectual property rights, protected technologies, and innovations to expand Africa\u2019s pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing sectors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cAfrica imports 80 percent to 90 percent of all its medicines for a population of 1.3 billion people.
