{"id":199287,"date":"2022-06-27T09:18:13","date_gmt":"2022-06-27T08:18:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=199287"},"modified":"2022-06-27T09:21:41","modified_gmt":"2022-06-27T08:21:41","slug":"afdb-access-to-finance-for-women-will-transform-africas-food-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/27\/afdb-access-to-finance-for-women-will-transform-africas-food-system\/","title":{"rendered":"AfDB: Access to finance for women will transform Africa\u2019s food system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has stated that access to finance for women will bolster inclusivity in Africa and narrow the global hunger gap.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Sunday by\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade, director-general, West Africa regional development and business delivery office of the bank, via a telephone interview with NAN.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Quoting Africa\u2019s gender index, Akin-Olugbade said only 23 percent of women have access to finance in the continent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She said the bank, in partnership with its partners, had rolled out the Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa (AFAWA) to bridge the finance gap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAFAWA is a pan-African initiative, which we have gotten partners to join the initiative, and the objective is to bridge the $42 million financing gap,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe are going to leverage on a number of financial instruments to add advisory services to really ensure successful implementation of the projects that we are going to deploy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe are going to provide technical training for women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/14\/fg-begins-training-of-467183-beneficiaries-of-exited-n-power-batches-on-entrepreneurship\/\">entrepreneurs<\/a> and managerial skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe really believe that with some of these activities, working with the government to support legal, policy, and regulatory reforms will really help to reduce barriers to women in finance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis is one of the initiatives that we need to bridge the finance gap women are facing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Akin-Olugbade added that the bank had approved close to half a billion dollars of lending to 2,000 women entrepreneurs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She said the AFAWA initiative is working on a two-year advisory project in Cote d\u2019Ivoire in consultation with the government and some financial institutions to empower women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe are going to have more than 300 women farmers-led organisations in the crops sector, and the women cooperatives will be linked to agriculture finance and digital platform so that they will be able to market their agriculture products,\u201d Akin-Olugbade said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis way, post-harvest losses can be reduced quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe are also in partnership with Ecobank in Ghana to change the agriculture landscape to transition women entrepreneurs into the formal sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWhat we have in Ghana is the $20 million AFAWA project that we call financing climate-resilient agriculture practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this project, we are targeting about 400 women-led small and medium enterprises, and with this, we can have a multiplier of 100 because we think we can reach about 400,000 beneficiaries.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has stated that access to finance for women will bolster inclusivity in Africa and narrow the global hunger gap.
