{"id":199917,"date":"2022-06-29T13:27:47","date_gmt":"2022-06-29T12:27:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=199917"},"modified":"2022-06-29T13:27:47","modified_gmt":"2022-06-29T12:27:47","slug":"why-i-cant-pay-salaries-sustain-benue-gov-ortom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/29\/why-i-cant-pay-salaries-sustain-benue-gov-ortom\/","title":{"rendered":"Why I can\u2019t pay salaries, sustain Benue \u2013 Gov Ortom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has explained why he is unable to pay salaries and keep the state running.<\/p>\n<p>Ortom, who appeared on Arise TV on Wednesday morning, claimed that the Federal Government was preventing him from paying salaries and sustaining Benue.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/02\/22\/abia-asks-teachers-to-resume-classes-begins-payment-of-salary-arrears\/\">Federal Government<\/a> has refused to assist him in obtaining a bank loan to offset salary arrears in Benue.<\/p>\n<p>Ortom said, \u201cIt is very simple, this is the blackmail of the federal government against me who is speaking the truth against the injustices that have been perpetrated against my state and against other parts of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo and ask them what they did in other states, did they not support the states in paying salaries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust two weeks ago, I applied to collect a loan not from the federal government from the bank to offset the arrears of salaries that are inherited over 70 billion naira, the federal government rejected it because I refused to join them in the APC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they had given me that money, I would have cleared it and then nobody would have been talking about issues of arrears of salaries. I have been paying salaries since 2018, when the stakeholders met and said I should pay and what is left is the arrears of salaries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the federal government has refused to support me, they frustrate me.
