{"id":199945,"date":"2022-06-29T16:26:45","date_gmt":"2022-06-29T15:26:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=199945"},"modified":"2022-06-29T18:32:26","modified_gmt":"2022-06-29T17:32:26","slug":"lady-sentenced-to-12-months-psychiatric-care-over-fake-kidnap-tweet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/29\/lady-sentenced-to-12-months-psychiatric-care-over-fake-kidnap-tweet\/","title":{"rendered":"Court sentence Ameerah Safiyanu over fake kidnap tweet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Twitter user, Ameerah Safiyanu who raised an alarm over an alleged kidnap has pleaded guilty before a magistrate court in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA learnt that she\u00a0was arraigned on Wednesday on the sole charge of misleading the police pursuant to section 140 of the penal code.<\/p>\n<p>James Idachaba, police prosecutor, tendered a medical report indicating that Sufyan was mentally ill when she gave the false information.<\/p>\n<p>Idachaba prayed the court to give the defendant a non-custodial sentence under section 44 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.<\/p>\n<p>He also prayed that she should be placed under the supervision of the police counselling unit, for a regular review of her mental state.<\/p>\n<p>Chinyere Moneme, defendant\u2019s counsel, did not oppose the submissions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/26\/academic-credentials-pdp-behind-call-for-tinubus-arrest-prosecution-campaign-organisation\/\">prosecution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In his judgment, Chukwuemeka Nweke, presiding magistrate, ordered that the defendant should be released conditionally to a probation officer.<\/p>\n<p>She is to undergo psychiatric care for the next 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>On June 14, Ameerah, via her Twitter handle @Ameerah_sufyan, tweeted that she and 16 other persons, including children and pregnant women, were kidnapped from their different homes in the federal capital territory (FCT).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease whoever has my WhatsApp number, I sent a broadcast message of my location. We were abducted at gunpoint by [people] with police uniforms and a van from our houses from different parts of Abuja. We\u2019re 17 including 3 pregnant women and two little kids. They didn\u2019t see my phone,\u201d she had written.<\/p>\n<p>In another post published about two hours after the previous one, she said the victims had been divided into separate groups.<\/p>\n<p>The incident had elicited reactions on social media as many Nigerians bemoaned the country\u2019s security challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The FCT police command while reacting to the incident had said\u00a0operatives had been deployed to track the victims.<\/p>\n<p>Three days later, the\u00a0FCT police command said Ameerah had been found and debunked the report of the abduction of 17 persons.<\/p>\n<p>Ameerah later made another post apologising that the previous tweet was a false alarm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Twitter user, Ameerah Safiyanu who raised an alarm over an alleged kidnap has pleaded guilty before a magistrate court in Abuja.
