{"id":199952,"date":"2022-06-29T16:39:25","date_gmt":"2022-06-29T15:39:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=199952"},"modified":"2022-06-29T16:39:25","modified_gmt":"2022-06-29T15:39:25","slug":"reps-invite-ahmed-emefiele-others-over-education-banks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/29\/reps-invite-ahmed-emefiele-others-over-education-banks\/","title":{"rendered":"Reps invite Ahmed, Emefiele, others over Education Banks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The House of Representatives on Wednesday invited the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed; the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu; and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele to brief it on efforts to reestablish the Education Bank in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution followed the adoption of a motion titled, \u2018Need to Establish Nigerian Education Bank in line with the Nigerian Education Bank Act,\u2019 sponsored by Hon. Uju Kingsley.<\/p>\n<p>Moving the motion, Kingsley noted that the Education Bank was established in 1993 to provide loans for students, and was designed to replace the former Students Loans Board.<\/p>\n<p>He expressed concerns that the failure to establish the bank has affected students as they lack credible sources to take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/17\/nnpp-tackles-ganduje-condemns-attempt-to-secure-n10b-loan-for-cctv-installation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">loans<\/a> to finance their education.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cThe House is aware that according to Section 70 of the Nigerian Education Bank Act, the Bank was saddled with the responsibility of approving and disbursing loans for educational purposes, providing loans to students to finance their education in institutions of higher education, recovering loans disbursed and providing shortterm loans to individuals or other bodies in appropriate cases, as well as aid authors by providing them with funds for the purpose of financing the printing and publishing of the educational book, among other functions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe House is concerned that since inception in 1993, the Education Bank has not had a Governing Board and for over 25 years, the bank had no physical address anywhere in Nigeria neither has the Act establishing it been repealed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adopting the motion, the House mandated its Committees on Banking and Currency, and Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The House of Representatives on Wednesday invited the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed; the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu; and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele to brief it on efforts to reestablish the Education Bank in Nigeria.
