{"id":201020,"date":"2022-07-04T05:16:29","date_gmt":"2022-07-04T04:16:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=201020"},"modified":"2022-07-04T05:16:29","modified_gmt":"2022-07-04T04:16:29","slug":"upth-debunks-report-of-14-babies-death-due-to-power-outage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/04\/upth-debunks-report-of-14-babies-death-due-to-power-outage\/","title":{"rendered":"UPTH debunks report of 14 babies death due to power outage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) has said there&#8217;s no iota of truth in a viral claim on social media that 14 babies died in its special care baby unit due to a power outage<\/p>\n<p>A viral post on social media claims that not less than 14 babies died in incubators at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) due to a power outage.<\/p>\n<p>In a tweet thread, which has now been deleted, one Chijioke Ekwulu, a Twitter user, said the irregular power supply at the hospital also disrupted surgery procedures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo less than 14 babies have died at the incubator of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH due to power outage. This is as some patients at the hospital said some surgery procedures have also been suspended due to irregular power supply,\u201d the tweet read.<\/p>\n<p>The tweet, posted on July 1,  garnered over 3,100 retweets, 1,120 quotes, and over 3,000 likes before it was deleted.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/standardobservers.com\/14-babies-death-upth-reacts-says-report-targeted-at-tarnishing-hospitals-image\/\">online media outlet<\/a>, Standard observers also published the claim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA medical officer at the hospital who spoke to Standardobservers on the conditions of anonymity said among the dead babies were the twin babies of a woman who had been looking for the fruit of the womb for seven years,\u201d the report read.<\/p>\n<p>However, Lucky Onotai, professor and chairman of the medical advisory committee, UPTH, has refuted the claims, describing it as spurious.<\/p>\n<p>He dismissed the claims and said, \u201cnothing like that happened\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the claim was aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the hospital. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know why people like to thrive on fake news. I have said this before, nothing like that happened. People just want to tarnish the hospital\u2019s name,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecable.ng\/its-false-upth-refutes-claim-14-babies-died-due-to-power-outage\/amp\">TheCable<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, confirmed there were some \u201ctransformer issues\u201d but insisted it did not affect the special baby care unit, where the incubators are kept.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, there was a power outage, but there are special departments that have dedicated generators on standby. One of them is the special baby care unit. It is impossible for power to go out that long. If anyone died, why haven\u2019t the mothers come forward?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Onotai, \u201cthe hospital\u2019s PRO has also confirmed that it is fake news. We receive hospital statistics every day, but nothing of such has happened. People like to spread false news like a wildfire in a dry harmattan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Best Ordinoha, a professor and doctor at UPTH, also refuted the claim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been an irregular power supply in the country, our hospital is not exempted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome administrative departments are the ones that suffer it most, but there are some units that can never be affected,\u201d he said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me tell you, the special baby care unit has its own generator. If the power goes out, the generator comes on immediately. Before the babies die from temperature irregularity, it will take hours. Do you think it is possible for health care professionals to sit and fold their hands for hours and watch the babies die?&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of
