{"id":201997,"date":"2022-07-08T06:39:01","date_gmt":"2022-07-08T05:39:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=201997"},"modified":"2022-07-08T07:06:06","modified_gmt":"2022-07-08T06:06:06","slug":"olisa-metuh-ekweremadu-kidney-donor-confessed-to-uk-police-that-he-lied","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/08\/olisa-metuh-ekweremadu-kidney-donor-confessed-to-uk-police-that-he-lied\/","title":{"rendered":"Ekweremadu&#8217;s kidney donor confessed to UK police that he lied, Olisa Metuh reveals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh has disclosed that David Ukpo, the Nigerian at the centre of the alleged organ harvesting case involving Ike Ekweremadu, has &#8220;recanted&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that a former deputy senate president, Ekweremadu and Beatrice, his wife, are facing charges bordering on conspiracy to arrange\/facilitate the travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.<\/p>\n<p>The couple last month was arrested by the London\u00a0Metropolitan Police for bringing a child to the UK for alleged organ harvesting.<\/p>\n<p>However, according to the Ekweremadus, Ukpo was in the UK as a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/07\/breaking-ekweremadu-kidney-donor-reveals-real-age-in-uk-court\/\"> kidney dono<\/a>r for Sonia, the lawmaker\u2019s daughter.<\/p>\n<p>The alleged kidney donor had also claimed to be a \u201cminor\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The UK authorities had, thereafter, charged the senator and his wife to court.<\/p>\n<p>In a ruling on Thursday, a Westminster magistrates court in the UK held that Ukpo is not a minor, after which the judge adjourned the case till August 4.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the case in an interview with ARISE TV, Metuh said Ukpo \u201crecanted\u201d, and told the police that he was not under 21.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most important thing that we witnessed today is that the so-called minor recanted, and of his own free will, went to the police again and confessed that he\u2019s not under 21; that means he\u2019s not a minor,\u201d Metuh said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd because of that, the judge struck out section 45, so everything about the case can be open, since a minor is no more involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Section 45<\/strong> of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 in the UK makes provisions for restrictions when reporting about \u201cvictims, witnesses and defendants under the age of 18 who appear in magistrates\u2019 courts and the Crown Court\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Metuh also expressed excitement over the judgment, adding that the defence counsel informed the court that \u201cthere was no exploitation that was involved\u201d in the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew that the guy is more than 21 years and he\u2019s going to be 22. We\u2019ve always known that, but for him to have said that, it\u2019s a good thing. So, we are happy about it,\u201d the former PDP spokesman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore importantly is the fact that the defence counsel had gotten up and said there was no exploitation that was involved. There was nothing at all.
