{"id":202275,"date":"2022-07-09T06:31:07","date_gmt":"2022-07-09T05:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=202275"},"modified":"2022-07-09T06:31:07","modified_gmt":"2022-07-09T05:31:07","slug":"ghana-records-first-suspected-case-of-highly-infectious-marburg-virus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/09\/ghana-records-first-suspected-case-of-highly-infectious-marburg-virus\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana records first suspected case of highly infectious Marburg virus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A West-African country, Ghana has reported its first ever suspected case of Marburg virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Marburg virus is a highly infectious hemorrhagic fever in the same family as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/25\/woman-in-uk-diagnosed-with-new-ebola-like-disease-that-has-40-death-rate\/\">Ebola.<\/a> It is spread to people by fruit bats and transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected people and surfaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Illness begins abruptly and many patients develop severe hemorrhagic signs within seven days. There are no vaccines or antiviral treatments approved to treat the virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The World Health Organisation (WHO) said the cases were discovered in two patients from the southern Ashanti region \u2013 both deceased and unrelated. They showed symptoms including diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The WHO said although preliminary analysis of samples taken from two patients by the country\u2019s Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research indicated the cases were positive for Marburg, per the standard procedure, the samples have been sent to the Institute Pasteur in Senegal, a WHO collaborating centre, for confirmation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It said if confirmed, these would the first infections recorded in Ghana and the second time Marburg has been detected in West Africa \u2014 Guinea being the first in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThey had been taken to a district hospital in Ashanti region.\u00a0Preparations for a possible outbreak response are being set up swiftly as further investigations are underway,\u201d the statement reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWHO is deploying experts to support Ghana\u2019s health authorities by bolstering disease surveillance, testing, tracing contacts, preparing to treat patients and working with communities to alert and educate them about the risks and dangers of the disease and to collaborate with the emergency response teams.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Francis Kasolo, WHO representative in Ghana, said health authorities are on the ground investigating the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe are working closely with the country to ramp up detection, track contacts, be ready to control the spread of the virus,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A West-African country, Ghana has reported its first ever suspected case of Marburg virus.
