{"id":204468,"date":"2022-07-19T08:40:22","date_gmt":"2022-07-19T07:40:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=204468"},"modified":"2022-07-19T08:40:22","modified_gmt":"2022-07-19T07:40:22","slug":"ghana-confirms-first-cases-of-deadly-marburg-virus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/19\/ghana-confirms-first-cases-of-deadly-marburg-virus\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana confirms first cases of deadly Marburg virus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ghana has confirmed its first two cases of the deadly Marburg virus, a highly infectious disease in the same family as the virus that causes Ebola.<\/p>\n<p>It says both patients died recently in hospital in the southern Ashanti region.<\/p>\n<p>Their samples came back positive earlier this month and have now been verified by a laboratory in Senegal.<\/p>\n<p>Health officials in the West African nation say 98 people are now under quarantine as suspected contact cases, BBC reported.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO), which is supporting the country\u2019s health authorities, has praised Ghana\u2019s swift response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is good because without immediate and decisive action, Marburg can easily get out of hand,\u201d said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO\u2019s Africa director.<\/p>\n<p>No treatment yet exists for Marburg \u2013 but doctors say drinking plenty of water and treating specific symptoms improves a patient\u2019s chances of survival.<\/p>\n<p>The virus is transmitted to people from fruit bats and spreads between humans through the transmission of bodily fluids.<\/p>\n<p>It is a severe, often fatal illness with symptoms including headache, fever, muscle pains, vomiting blood and bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>Officials are warning people to keep away from caves and to thoroughly cook all meat products before consumption.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second time that Marburg has been identified in West Africa.<\/p>\n<p>There was one confirmed case in Guinea last year, but that outbreak was declared over in September, five weeks after the case was identified.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere on the continent, previous outbreaks and sporadic cases have been reported in Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/24\/who-confirms-3200-cases-of-monkeypox-in-nigeria-48-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHO<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p>The virus killed more than 200 people in Angola in 2005, the deadliest outbreak on record according to the global health body.<\/p>\n<p>The first ever Marburg outbreak was in Germany in 1967 where seven people died.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ghana has confirmed its first two cases of the deadly Marburg virus, a highly infectious disease in the same family as the virus that causes Ebola.
