{"id":204986,"date":"2022-07-21T14:43:57","date_gmt":"2022-07-21T13:43:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=204986"},"modified":"2022-07-21T14:43:57","modified_gmt":"2022-07-21T13:43:57","slug":"emefiele-nigerians-now-shamefully-pay-dollars-to-study-in-west-african-varsities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/21\/emefiele-nigerians-now-shamefully-pay-dollars-to-study-in-west-african-varsities\/","title":{"rendered":"Emefiele: Nigerians now shamefully pay dollars to study in West African varsities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele has stated that Nigerians now &#8220;&#8216;shamefully&#8221; pay dollars to study in universities in neighbouring\u00a0 West African countries.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Tuesday by Emefiele while responding to questions from journalists after the monetary policy committee (MPC) briefing in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>He condemned the pervasiveness of educational and medical tourism as he discussed the impact of CBN\u2019s interventions in both sectors.<\/p>\n<p>The apex bank\u2019s governor noted that a combination of medical and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/30\/you-cant-succeed-outside-your-educational-qualification-buhari\/\">educational tourism<\/a> costs the country a total of $10 billion, and asked all stakeholders to work together in bringing an end to it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur interest in this is that it reduces medical tourism. Medical tourism today, in Nigeria, consumed nothing less than $10 billion. At least $10 billion is what we spend in a combination of medical tourism and educational tourism,\u201d Emefiele said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigerians now go to school shamefully in some of our neighboring West African countries and they pay dollars. I do understand the feelings of ASUU, the feelings of our lecturers, but they need also to know that by keeping these children at home, their parents, looking at them, it is a dangerous trend that we all must place our hands on deck and see what can be done to stop what is happening in educational tourism in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut again, I must say that I\u2019m happy that there are very strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/04\/akeredolu-calls-for-funding-of-private-universities-through-tetfund-grants\/\">private universities<\/a> that have sprung up in Nigeria. And we can only just continue to encourage them so as to continue to lift the standards of education in Nigeria. Let\u2019s not forget ladies and gentlemen, people see that health and education are the bedrock of development of any country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot afford to relegate them to the background. So everything that needs to be done to improve the level of health care and education in Nigeria. We should all put our hands on deck to get this done. But I repeat your selfish interest of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/20\/cbn-vows-to-arrest-nigerians-using-naira-to-buy-dollars\/\">CBN<\/a> here is that we need to stop medical and educational tourism in Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Further speaking on medical tourism, Emefiele commended Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo for patronizing a Nigerian hospital for his recent surgery.<\/p>\n<p>He said Osinbajo\u2019s act was exemplary and proves that world-class hospitals exist in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst, let me seize this opportunity to wish His Excellency the Vice-President well, and quick recovery after his successful surgery at Dutchess International Hospital here in Lagos.
