{"id":205128,"date":"2022-07-22T04:53:23","date_gmt":"2022-07-22T03:53:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=205128"},"modified":"2022-07-22T04:56:35","modified_gmt":"2022-07-22T03:56:35","slug":"south-africas-multichoice-sued-for-misusing-power-in-nigeria-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/22\/south-africas-multichoice-sued-for-misusing-power-in-nigeria-market\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa\u2019s MultiChoice sued for \u2018misusing power\u2019 in Nigeria market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A legal practitioner, Festus Onifade, has dragged MultiChoice Nigeria Limited to court over misuse the power of its dominance in the market.<\/p>\n<p>Onifade made the complaint to a Competition and Consumer Protection (CCPC) Tribunal in Abuja, NAN reports.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer moved a counter affidavit, opposing the MultIChoice\u2019s motion challenging the jurisdiction of the tribunal.<\/p>\n<p>On June 20, the three-member panel led by Thomas Okosun granted Onifade\u2019s reliefs in an application requesting a leave to amend his originating summons.<\/p>\n<p>The litigant is suing the South African company, the operators of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/22\/breaking-multichoice-increases-prices-of-gotv-dstv-packages\/\">DStv and GOtv<\/a>, for N10 million damages.<\/p>\n<p>Onifade, in the amended summons filed June 20, wants an order mandating MultiChoice to adopt a pay-as-you-view model of billing.<\/p>\n<p>Onifade and the Coalition of Nigeria Consumers dragged the firm before the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on April 11, the tribunal directed MultiChoice to revert to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/31\/tribunal-restricts-multichoice-from-increasing-dstv-gotv-subscription-rates\/\">old prices and maintain the status quo of its March 30 order, pending determination of the matter.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the federal panel ordered the firm to file its response to Onifade\u2019s objection.
