{"id":205880,"date":"2022-07-25T20:47:14","date_gmt":"2022-07-25T19:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=205880"},"modified":"2022-07-25T20:47:14","modified_gmt":"2022-07-25T19:47:14","slug":"edo-confirms-eight-monkeypox-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/25\/edo-confirms-eight-monkeypox-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"Edo confirms eight Monkeypox cases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Health in Edo State has disclosed that\u00a0eight persons have tested positive for Monkeypox in the state, urging residents to observe safety measures to reduce the spread of the virus and other infectious diseases in the state.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed by the state commissioner for health, Prof. Akoria Obehi in Benin City.<\/p>\n<p>Obehi said the Ministry has ramped up surveillance and other activities to curb the spread of the infectious disease.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>She, however, noted that all persons who were diagnosed with the disease have recovered.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Obehi noted, \u201cAmid the rise in the number of confirmed cases of Monkeypox in Edo, it has become imperative to warn on the health risks that the virus poses and reiterate the need for residents to be cautious and adhere to safety measures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>he Commissioner highlighted symptoms of Monkeypox to include fever, headache, weakness of the body, sore throat, and enlargement of glands under the jaw and in the neck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can also come with the appearance of a rash on the face, palms, soles of the feet, genitals, and other parts of the body, which can appear solid or fluid-filled at the onset and can manifest within a period of two to three weeks following<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/07\/covid-19-nigeria-records-59-fresh-infections-in-five-states-abuja\/\"> infection<\/a>, depending on the health status of the individual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While advising on measures to contain the disease, she noted, \u201cThe virus can be transmitted from infected animals and rodents such as rats, mice, squirrels, and even monkeys; through contact with infected blood, body fluids, spots, blisters or scabs, and sharing of objects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The commissioner further advised: \u201cAvoid contact with dead or live wild animals such as small mammals including rodents (rats, squirrels) and non-human primates (monkeys, apes).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThoroughly cook all foods containing animal meat before eating; avoid unprotected contact with infected animals, humans, their beddings, and other linen; wash hands regularly, and use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/05\/28\/monkeypox-nigeria-intensifies-surveillance-to-prevent-epidemic\/\">sanitizer<\/a> when water is not available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Restating the government\u2019s commitment to containing the outbreak and protecting the health of residents, the Edo health commissioner said the State Disease Surveillance Team had been deployed to control the outbreak in the state, alongside the engagement of stakeholders across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you suspect any symptoms of Monkeypox, kindly visit the nearest health facility for medical attention or call the acting State Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (0806 059 3802),\u201d Prof Akoria advised.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Health in Edo State has disclosed that\u00a0eight persons have tested positive for Monkeypox in the state, urging residents to observe safety measures to reduce the spread of the virus and other infectious diseases in the state.
