{"id":206545,"date":"2022-07-29T05:20:07","date_gmt":"2022-07-29T04:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=206545"},"modified":"2022-07-29T05:21:30","modified_gmt":"2022-07-29T04:21:30","slug":"why-nigeria-is-vulnerable-to-food-price-hike-pat-utomi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/29\/why-nigeria-is-vulnerable-to-food-price-hike-pat-utomi\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Nigeria is vulnerable to food price hike \u2013 Pat Utomi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pat Utomi, a professor of political economy, says Nigeria has been badly hit by rising cost of food because the country is not producing most of what its uses. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Thursday in an interview with Channels Television, Utomi said the country is currently in a \u201cvulnerable\u201d position because the it relies on importation.<\/p>\n<p>He averred that the major problem of Nigeria is inability to produce most of the things its people consume. <\/p>\n<p>There have been concerns over the rising cost of food items, and the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/14\/imf-inflation-pushing-nigeria-others-to-the-brink\/\">inflation rate hit a five-year high in June 2022.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the state of the country\u2019s economy, Utomi, a former presidential candidate on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said for Nigeria to develop, the electorate must vote for leaders who are truly interested in serving the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe real issue here is that we are not producing. We are not exporting, so we are hit very badly by the fact that we are so import-dependent and the prices of those imports are going crazy, and now we are so dependent on importation of food,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should have been going for a clear national security thing with food security. We are vulnerable because we are importing everything \u2013 what we eat \u2014 in a country that should be exporting food.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can fix this if we just take ourselves seriously for a little bit.
