Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola has said only persons below the age of sixty should be jostling for public offices and political positions.<\/p>\n

Speaking during an interview with PUNCH, Fashola said he chose not to seek any political position in 2023 because he believed it was time to yield the space for younger characters.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are talking about young people, is it not time for us to leave the space? I came in at 39, I\u2019m going at 60, let some 30-year olds too come and start their journey. It\u2019s time to go.\u201d Fashola opined<\/p>\n

Earlier touted as one of the frontrunners for presidency in the 2023, Fashola<\/a> didn’t join the deluge of contestants who scrambled for his party, the All Progressives Congress\u2019 ticket in the June 7 primary election.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going home,\u201d he stressed when asked of his next political move.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou see, next year, it will be 35 years since I left school, 1988 to 2023. So, if I took a public service career, I will retire next year, because the rule is 35 years of service or 60 years of age, and coincidentally by next year, I\u2019ll be 60 years.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Fashola’s position on age of public office holders is not in sync with the decision that the APC that\u2019s fielding Bola Tinubu, 76, as its presidential candidate in the 2023 elections. Tinubu is Fashola\u2019s predecessor and political benefactor in Lagos.<\/p>\n

But Fashola said he cannot answer for his party\u2019s decision to field the septuagenarian for Nigeria\u2019s top job, saying it was Tinubu\u2019s personal decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve answered you about myself and that\u2019s my own decision. The candidate also has his own decision to make that he wants to lead the country in an elected capacity,\u201d Mr Fashola said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
