{"id":207271,"date":"2022-08-01T15:11:05","date_gmt":"2022-08-01T14:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=207271"},"modified":"2022-08-01T15:11:05","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T14:11:05","slug":"pantami-rejects-imposition-of-5-excise-duty-on-telecoms-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/08\/01\/pantami-rejects-imposition-of-5-excise-duty-on-telecoms-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"Pantami rejects imposition of 5% excise duty on telecoms sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria\u2019s minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Pantami, has rejected the planned implementation of the five percent excise duty on the telecommunications sector by the Federal Government.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Lagos today, at the ongoing forum organised by the Nigeria Office for Developing the indigenous Telecom Sector (NODITS), an agency domiciled in the Nigeria Communications Commision (NCC), the minister faulted the timing and process of imposing the tax on the industry, arguing that part of the responsibility of responsive government is not to increase the problems of the citizens.<\/p>\n<p>He said he is not in support of excise duty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have not been contacted officially. If we are, we surely will state our case. The sector that contributes to the economy should be encouraged,\u201d Pantami said. \u201cYou introduce excise duty to discourage luxury goods like alcohol. Broadband is a necessity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf u look at it carefully the sector contributes two per cent excise duty, 7.5 per cent VAT to the economy and you want to add, more\u201d he said, adding hardship at this time cannot be tolerated. He urged the tax masters to expand the scope of other sectors that are not contributing to the economy to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must come together and salvage the sector. Only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/28\/telecom-subscribers-to-pay-5-tax-on-call-text-data-as-ncc-rallies-stakeholders-on-implementation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">telecom sector<\/a> contributed 13per cent and you want to add more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pantami faulted the lawmaking process that produced the harsh tax because it didn\u2019t involve the chairman of the House Communications Committee. \u201cSo we reject it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, further tax on the sector will impact on its contribution to the country\u2019s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria\u2019s minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Pantami, has rejected the planned implementation of the five percent excise duty on the telecommunications sector by the Federal Government.
