The CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey has chosen Ghana as the country to establish its headquarters in Africa.<\/p>\n

Jack made the announcement on Monday on Twitter.<\/p>\n

His tweet read: \u201cTwitter is now present on the continent. Thank you Ghana and Nana Akufo-Addo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in an explainer on its website, Twitter<\/a> gave an explanation on why it choose Ghana over other countries including Nigeria. The population of Nigeria on social media only (33 million) is greater than the entire population of Ghana (30.42 million).<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate. Furthermore, Ghana\u2019s recent appointment to host The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever we enter new markets, we work hard to ensure that we are not just investing in the talent that we hire, but also investing in local communities and the social fabric that supports them. We have already laid foundations through partnerships with Amref Health Africa in Kenya, Afrochella in Ghana, Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI) in Nigeria, and The HackLab Foundation in Ghana. As part of our long-term commitment to the region, we\u2019ll continue to explore compelling ways we can use the positive power of Twitter to strengthen our communities through employee engagement, platform activation, and corporate giving.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe still have much to learn but we are excited to listen, learn, and engage. Public conversation is essential to solving problems, building shared ideas, and pushing us all forward together. We can\u2019t wait for the next step on that journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

Responding, President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo on his official Twitter page revealed that the partnership was agreed upon after a virtual meeting with Jack.<\/p>\n

His tweet read: \u201cThe choice of Ghana as Headquarters for Twitter\u2019s Africa operations is EXCELLENT news. The government and Ghanaians welcome very much this announcement and the confidence reposed in our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Nana Akufo-Addo while welcoming the development described the partnership as exciting for Ghana\u2019s tech sector.<\/p>\n

His tweet read: \u201cAs I indicated to Jack in our virtual meeting which held on 7th April 2021, this is the start of a beautiful partnership between Twitter and Ghana, which is critical for the development of Ghana\u2019s hugely important tech sector.<\/p>\n
