{"id":209118,"date":"2022-08-09T15:38:52","date_gmt":"2022-08-09T14:38:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=209118"},"modified":"2022-08-09T15:38:52","modified_gmt":"2022-08-09T14:38:52","slug":"kyari-nigeria-loses-1-9bn-every-month-to-crude-oil-theft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/08\/09\/kyari-nigeria-loses-1-9bn-every-month-to-crude-oil-theft\/","title":{"rendered":"Kyari: Nigeria loses $1.9bn every month to crude oil theft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), NNPC Limited, Mele Kyari has disclosed that Nigeria loses $1.9 billion monthly to crude oil theft.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This was made known by Kyari when a delegation on an anti-oil theft team led by Timipre Sylva, minister of state for petroleum resources, visited Ifeanyi Okowa,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0governor of Delta, on Monday at the government house, Asaba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He said Nigeria hardly meet the production quota due to the activities of these economic saboteurs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAs a country, we hardly meet our OPEC production quantum of 1.99 million barrels per day with our current production level of 1.4 million barrels per day which is currently being threatened by the activities of these economic saboteurs,\u201d the GCEO said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis has done extensive damage to the environment, and losing $1.9 billion every month is colossal, considering the nature of the global economy at the moment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kyari emphasised that the team needed the support and buy-in of the Delta state government \u201cbecause stopping this oil theft requires the concerted efforts of the federal, state governments, oil companies and security agencies\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On his part, Sylva said oil theft had become a national emergency as the country could not meet its Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/06\/five-key-things-you-probably-do-not-know-about-late-opec-secretary-general-barkindo\/\">OPEC<\/a>) quota.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cOur production has dropped drastically to very unsustainable levels; so, we have decided to take the bull by the horn by putting some structures in place, and those structures cannot function effectively without the collaboration of the state government,\u201d the minister said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On his part, Okowa called for the review of surveillance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/29\/manchester-united-top-stars-regret-signing-contracts\/\">contracts<\/a> on oil facilities to involve host communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWhy investment of the communities is needed is because there are some parts of the creeks that cannot be accessed by the surveillance contractor. Therefore, surveillance contracts should not be such that communities are not involved,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe surveillance contracts should be tied to performance, and it is always good that communities are involved because they know the environment better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Meanwhile, the team also visited Hope Uzodimma, governor of Imo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Speaking at a stakeholders\u2019 meeting with the governor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/07\/nnpc-has-good-supply-says-timipre-sylva-as-he-reveals-the-cause-of-petrol-scarcity\/\">Sylva<\/a> reiterated the need to come together and collaborate to solve the problem \u201cand avoid the problem killing us as a country\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAnd to achieve the above there is the need to involve the State Government and the people at the grassroots,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On his part, Uzodimma said: \u201cCrude oil theft is run by a cabal and a cartel that are ready always to resist the security agencies.
