{"id":209393,"date":"2022-08-10T23:17:31","date_gmt":"2022-08-10T22:17:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=209393"},"modified":"2022-08-10T23:17:31","modified_gmt":"2022-08-10T22:17:31","slug":"buhari-reverses-approval-for-seplat-to-buy-exxonmobil-shares-supports-nuprc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/08\/10\/buhari-reverses-approval-for-seplat-to-buy-exxonmobil-shares-supports-nuprc\/","title":{"rendered":"Buhari reverses approval for Seplat to buy ExxonMobil shares, supports NUPRC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Muhammadu Buhari has reversed his approval of Seplat Energy\u2019s purchase of ExxonMobil\u2019s Assets<\/p>\n<p>Special Adviser to the President on Media and Puucity, Mr Femi Adesina, had, two days ago, said Buhari approved the purchase of ExxonMobil share by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/25\/nnpc-were-collaborating-with-security-agencies-host-communities-to-tackle-oil-theft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seplat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Revealing the latest development, however, Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, confirmed that President\u2019s reversal of his earlier approal was in line with the position of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the confusion over ExxonMobil shares was because \u201cthe various agencies involved in the decision had not coordinated well among themselves and having looked at all of the facts with all of the ramifications, the president decided the position of the regulator is to be supported.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NUPRC had, in a statement over Buhari\u2019s earlier approval of the assets \u2018 acquisition, said, as the sole regulator, it is the one one that could deal with such matter. It therefore said status quo remained.<\/p>\n<p>The state from the Chief Executive of the NUPRC Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, said the Commission, in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 is the sole regulator in dealing with such matters in the Nigerian upstream sector.<\/p>\n<p>NUPRC said: \u201cAs it were, the issue at stake is purely a regulatory matter and the Commission had earlier communicated the decline of Ministerial assent to ExxonMobil in this regard. As such the Commission further affirms that the status quo remains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Commission is committed to ensuring predictable and conducive regulatory environment at all times in the Nigerian upstream sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seplat Energy Plc had, last February announced an agreement to acquire the entire share capital of Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited from Exxon Mobil Corporation, Delaware for $1.28bn.<\/p>\n<p>The transaction entails the acquisition of ExxonMobil Nigeria\u2019s entire offshore shallow water, an established, high-quality operation with a highly skilled local operating team and a track record of safe operations.<\/p>\n<p>The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, however, has a pre-emptive right over the asset and had last month won a court decision temporarily blocking Exxon Mobil Corporation from selling assets in Nigeria to Seplat Energy Plc.<\/p>\n<p>A Judge in Abuja had granted NNPC an \u201corder of interim injunction\u201d on July 6, 2022, barring Exxon Mobil \u201cfrom completing any divestment\u201d in a unit that ultimately operates four licenses in Nigeria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Muhammadu Buhari has reversed his approval of Seplat Energy\u2019s purchase of ExxonMobil\u2019s Assets Special Adviser to the President on Media and Puucity, Mr Femi Adesina, had, two days ago, said Buhari approved the purchase of ExxonMobil share by Seplat.
