{"id":209477,"date":"2022-08-11T09:16:09","date_gmt":"2022-08-11T08:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=209477"},"modified":"2022-08-11T09:16:09","modified_gmt":"2022-08-11T08:16:09","slug":"govt-will-not-borrow-n1-1-trillion-to-meet-asuus-demand-says-umahi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/08\/11\/govt-will-not-borrow-n1-1-trillion-to-meet-asuus-demand-says-umahi\/","title":{"rendered":"Govt will not borrow N1.1 trillion to meet ASUU\u2019s demand, says Umahi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State, yesterday, said even though the demand by the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) is genuine, there is no way the country will borrow N1.1 trillion to meet the union\u2019s demand.<\/p>\n<p>Umahi, in a statement, when he received members of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, led by Mr. Ben Akubueze, insisted that the basic problem in the country remains security, health and education.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/31\/breaking-umahi-clinches-apcs-ebonyi-south-senatorial-ticket\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Umahi<\/a>, a university education is not for everybody. He stressed that the basic education every country strives to attain is secondary and vocational school education. He maintained that these are basic schools and that qualifications obtained from them can aid one to start up something or gain employment.<\/p>\n<p>According to him: \u201cThere is a need to review our educational system; it mustn\u2019t be for everybody. I am not ashamed that I have a first degree and my deputy is a PhD holder; it doesn\u2019t matter. So, I cannot see how we cannot sit down with ASUU leaders and iron out the strike problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have read on the social media and newspapers how students got into trouble just by sitting at home or engaged in other means of keeping themselves busy instead of being in school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no way the country will borrow N1.1 trillion to meet ASUU\u2019s demand; it\u2019s unreasonable. Are the demands genuine? Yes, but we can start little by little.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere must be a commitment from both parties. ASUU members are not making demands to take to their houses so to say; they are asking for better infrastructure, as well as better lecturers and students. Yes, but we can start with a fraction of that and then have a programme that will run on the platform of sincerity to address all demands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me also say that most of the time, our people have a low appetite for maintenance of public works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No matter how much you deploy to these universities, unless the users, the industry, the regulators begin to treat public infrastructure as their own, it will continue to go bad no matter how much Federal Government deploys to it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State, yesterday, said even though the demand by the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) is genuine, there is no way the country will borrow N1.1 trillion to meet the union\u2019s demand.
