{"id":210388,"date":"2022-08-15T21:31:53","date_gmt":"2022-08-15T20:31:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=210388"},"modified":"2022-08-15T21:33:17","modified_gmt":"2022-08-15T20:33:17","slug":"presidency-boundaries-between-nigeria-neighbours-artificial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/08\/15\/presidency-boundaries-between-nigeria-neighbours-artificial\/","title":{"rendered":"Presidency: Boundaries between Nigeria, neighbours artificial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Presidency has asserted that the land borders that separate Nigeria and her neighbours were designed by men. <\/p>\n<p>The Chief of Staff of to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/08\/14\/why-we-want-to-break-away-from-nigeria-yoruba-group-writes-buhari\/\">President Muhamnadu Buhari,<\/a> Professor Ibrahim Gambari, made the assertion on Monday in Abuja. <\/p>\n<p>Gambari spoke when he hosted two of the President\u2019s staff, who were recently honoured by the President of Niger Republic, Mohammed Bazoum.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Gambari, at the reception that was held in the State House, described Buhari\u2019s foreign policy as \u2018concentric circle\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The presidential aides on whom the Nigerien highest honour were recently conferred were the State Chief of Protocol (SCOP), Lawal Kazaure, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Household and Domestic Affairs, Sarkin Ada.<\/p>\n<p>Gambari said that those countries sharing borders with Nigeria, including Cameroon, Benin Republic, Chad and Niger Republic, share same interests and cultural affinities which bind them together.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, \u201cAll these boundaries are very much artificial. The Europeans in Congress of Berlin just took a piece of paper and were drawing lines across places where they have never been.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey never intended to be separated. People who should be united and uniting people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the leaders of Africa decided that it\u2019s wise to keep those boundaries artificial as they may be, because to change them other than peacefully will be creating even more problems than they can solve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut in any case, whether by those lines, whether artificial or not, Niger\/Nigeria share common boundaries, common interests, common concerns for their families across the borders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on Buhari\u2019s foreign policy, Prof. Gambari said: \u201cIn his (Buhari\u2019s) earlier incarnation as Head of State, the defining feature of his  policies was concentric circle of Nigerian foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat our interests, our efforts, will be concentrated on promoting Nigeria\u2019s interests in concentric circles at the epicenter; the defense of Nigeria\u2019s integrity, the prosperity, the welfare of its people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut next is the neighbouring countries, then West Africa, then Africa, and then the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he has proved the continuity of Nigeria foreign policy in this sense by the fact that the first countries he visited after being sworn in were the neighbouring countries.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Presidency has asserted that the land borders that separate Nigeria and her neighbours were designed by men.
