At least 14 people have been killed and 28 others injured after police opened fire on a crowd trying to break into a police station to kill four men accused of kidnapping an albino child in Madagascar.<\/p>\n

According to Razafintsiandraofa, an MP for the Ikongo district, kidnapping<\/a> took place last week about 80 kilometers southeast of the capital Antananarivo.<\/p>\n

It was reported that a mob of about 500 angry villagers armed with machetes and knives stormed the local police station in Ikongo, calling for the release of the four suspects arrested on Sunday, August 28, to deal with them.<\/p>\n

The protesters \u201cthen tried to break into the station,\u201d a police officer told AFP.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were negotiations, the villagers insisted,\u201d the officer said on the phone, as police fired smoke grenades and shots into the air in an attempt to disperse the crowd.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey kept pushing their way through\u2026 We had no choice but to defend ourselves,\u201d the police officer said.<\/p>\n

Local doctor Tango Oscar Toky said \u201cnine people died on the spot\u201d and another five died later in hospital.<\/p>\n

Nine of the injured are in critical condition, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe gendarmes \u2026 fired at the crowd,\u201d local lawmaker Jean-Brunelle Razafintsiandraofa in the southeastern city of Ikongo told AFP.<\/p>\n
