{"id":216775,"date":"2022-09-16T08:13:24","date_gmt":"2022-09-16T07:13:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=216775"},"modified":"2022-09-16T08:13:24","modified_gmt":"2022-09-16T07:13:24","slug":"hindus-file-suit-for-right-to-pray-inside-mosque","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/09\/16\/hindus-file-suit-for-right-to-pray-inside-mosque\/","title":{"rendered":"Hindus file suit for right to pray inside mosque"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Five Hindu women in India, in the holy city of Varanasi, have instituted a legal action seeking permission to conduct daily prayers inside the Gyanvapi mosque. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/09\/04\/borno-terrorists-attack-mosque-kill-chief-imam-three-worshippers\/\">mosque<\/a> is believed to be the former site of a Hindu temple. <\/p>\n<p>In the controversial suit, the Hindu women argued the Hindu temple predated the mosque and therefore prayed the court to allow them to worship both \u201cvisible and invisible deities within the old temple complex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opposing the suit was a select Muslim committee who asked that Judge Ajay Krishna Vishvesha to throw out the petition since the site had housed the mosque for 350 years.<\/p>\n<p>They reminded the court of the 1991 Places of Worship Act which mandates that \u201cthe religious character of all public places must be maintained as they were on August 15, 1947,\u201d according to VOA.<\/p>\n<p>After hearing both parties, Viveshka said the Muslim committee\u2019s plea for dismissal lacked merit and thereby assented to hear the matter on Thursday, according to Shivam Goud, legal counsel for the petitioners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a win for the Hindu community,\u201d said Sohanlal Arya, another Hindu lawyer. \u201cThe decision of the court should be viewed as a foundation stone for the Gyanvapi temple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Muslim leaders have expressed fears of a possible recurrence of the dangerous 1992 religious riots over the Mughal-era Babri Mosque in Ayodhya, acknowledged by many Hindus as the significant birthplace of the Ram deity.<\/p>\n<p>An angry Hindu mob had set ablaze the mosque, stirring outrage and violent protests that resulted in the deaths of many Indians, the majority of whom were Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s Supreme Court, in a 2019 verdict, awarded the Babri Court to the Hindus, citing the Places of Worship Act.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the matter, Delhi-based Muslim community leader Zafarul-Islam Khan said Ms Viveshka\u2019s order had invalidated the Act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimilar court cases involving mosques and other Islamic structures are going on at various places across India,\u201d he told VOA. \u201cGradually, cases for Hindu rights will be made and later all of them will be usurped at the right moments in the future, as happened with the Babri Mosque.
