{"id":217368,"date":"2022-09-19T17:05:20","date_gmt":"2022-09-19T16:05:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=217368"},"modified":"2022-09-19T17:05:20","modified_gmt":"2022-09-19T16:05:20","slug":"lagos-impounds-40-trailers-under-bridges-to-prosecute-owners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/09\/19\/lagos-impounds-40-trailers-under-bridges-to-prosecute-owners\/","title":{"rendered":"Lagos impounds 40 trailers under bridges, to prosecute owners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Monday impounded 40 illegally parked trucks, tankers and trailers under flyovers in the Costain\/Iganmu axis.<\/p>\n<p>The exercise was conducted after a seven-day notice to remove such illegally parked and abandoned vehicles had expired.<\/p>\n<p>The General Manager of LASTMA Mr. Bolaji Oreagba said that the enforcement operation was led by the Director of Operations (Headquarters) Mr. Peter Gbedemeje.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that appropriate charges would be brought against the owners and drivers of the seized vehicles in court.<\/p>\n<p>The LASTMA boss said that the level of voluntary compliance before the enforcement was encouraging.<\/p>\n<p>He claimed that the majority had already removed their heavy-duty vehicles before the exercise began.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very happy with the level of voluntary compliance by owner\/drivers of these illegally parked trucks including other illegal workshops such as Iron benders, mechanics, and food\/ fruits vendors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese 40 impounded trailers were contravened around Ijora, Costain, Breweries and Ajegunle Park by Ijora Mobil Road area of Iganmu, Lagos,\u201d Oreagba said.<\/p>\n<p>Gbedemeje, the Head of Operations, stated that the authority would carry out the cleanup operation.<\/p>\n<p>Gbedemeje said that the exercise would be extended to other parts of the state in order to checkmate criminal activities.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu had on Sept. 12 ordered the removal of all abandoned vehicles parked indiscriminately under bridges across the state.<\/p>\n<p>The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, made this known during an emergency meeting with stakeholders, held at Ikeja.<\/p>\n<p>Giwa said that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/15\/sanwo-olu-appoints-bolaji-oreagba-as-lastma-general-manager\/\">Gov. Sanwo-Olu<\/a> had declared zero tolerance for environmental abuse, illegal and indiscriminate dumping of refuse, and defacing of the environment when he signed the \u2018Executive Order\u2019 on traffic and sanitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI can assure you that government will enforce this notice after the expiration of the seven days ultimatum beginning from today (Monday),\u201d he had said.<\/p>\n<p>Giwa appealed to owners of abandoned vehicles to comply, as the \u2018Removal Notice\u2019 became necessary due to security issues and attendant gridlock in identified areas.<\/p>\n<p>He listed Costain, Apapa, Ajah, and Lekki, among such areas.<\/p>\n<p>In his address, Oreagba, General Manager, LASTMA, had served a seven-day removal and compliance notice to owners of trucks and other vehicles parked under Costain Bridge area.<\/p>\n<p>He urged them to comply or risk having their vehicles impounded; and prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p>Oreagba said that the state government was committed to reducing the traffic problems around the axis, hence, it had become important to remove bottlenecks to achieving that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Monday impounded 40 illegally parked trucks, tankers and trailers under flyovers in the Costain\/Iganmu axis.
