{"id":217717,"date":"2022-09-21T13:05:18","date_gmt":"2022-09-21T12:05:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=217717"},"modified":"2022-09-21T13:05:18","modified_gmt":"2022-09-21T12:05:18","slug":"breaking-court-orders-asuu-to-call-off-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/09\/21\/breaking-court-orders-asuu-to-call-off-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING: Court orders ASUU to call off strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Industrial Court of Nigeria has ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its ongoing nationwide strike.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that ASUU has been on strike since February 14 to press home the demands for improved funding for universities, a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.<\/p>\n<p>Several meetings between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/09\/20\/asuu-strike-weve-people-who-dont-value-education-in-power-sanusi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ASUU<\/a> and the Federal Government had ended in a deadlock.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the Federal Government went to court to challenge the strike.<\/p>\n<p>According to TheCable, the government, through its counsel, James Igwe, prayed the court for an interlocutory injunction restraining ASUU from taking further steps as regards the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/09\/19\/court-decides-fgs-prayer-to-end-asuu-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strike<\/a>, pending the determination of the substantive suit.<\/p>\n<p>Igwe said the suit was filed in national interest, adding that the strike will result in irreparable damage to Nigerian students and to the country.<\/p>\n<p>The counsel had submitted that section 18(1)E of the Trade Disputes Act provides that employees cannot be on strike when a matter is before the industrial court.<\/p>\n<p>The judge, Polycarp Hamman, granted the request on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Details later\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Industrial Court of Nigeria has ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its ongoing nationwide strike.
