{"id":217858,"date":"2022-09-22T05:55:49","date_gmt":"2022-09-22T04:55:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=217858"},"modified":"2022-09-22T05:55:49","modified_gmt":"2022-09-22T04:55:49","slug":"el-rufai-says-fg-has-spent-n1-6trn-on-power-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/09\/22\/el-rufai-says-fg-has-spent-n1-6trn-on-power-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"El-Rufai Says FG Has Spent N1.6trn On Power Sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has said the federal government has spent about N1.6 trillion in form of intervention on the power sector. <\/p>\n<p>El-Rufai disclosed that the privatised electric power sector is depleting the government purse and resources gulping about about N1.6 trillion in support from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Ministry of Finance from 2013 to 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The governor made the disclosure yesterday at the 9th edition of the Nigeria Energy Conference in Lagos. <\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThere are interventions proposed by the World Bank to provide another $750m to the sector in a performance-for-results programme. In contrast, the telecoms sector has never needed any intervention of this nature since deregulation in 2001.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor said while the government is seeing results after privatising the telecoms sector with value addition, \u201cThe same cannot be said of the companies that cornered the electricity distribution companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf these structural bottlenecks are not addressed within a public policy perspective that gives primacy to serious private sector leadership in the sector, even the most determined minister of power can only engage in heroic, but largely futile, labour\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/09\/20\/el-rufai-warns-against-blocking-kaduna-abuja-road\/\">El-Rufai<\/a> noted that state governments are willing to come to the aid of the federal government in tackling the challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe state governments are willing and able to come to the aid of the FG in addressing these power challenges.
