Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, has explained why security raided the Eke-Ututu Market on Saturday in Orsu Local Government Area of the state.<\/p>\n

Security operatives raided and burnt some shops in the market after materials for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were allegedly uncovered in the place, News Agency of Nigeria reports.<\/p>\n

Uzodimma said that bandits operating in the area use the IEDs<\/a> to fight security operatives.<\/p>\n

The governor, who stated this while addressing newsmen on the development at the Government House in Owerri on Wednesday, added that a Major in the Nigerian Army on duty around Orsu Awo-idemmili died last month from an explosion from the device.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cLast Saturday, a joint security force, which arrested a bandit, took him after his confession to guide them to where they operate from and manufacture the explosives.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt turned out to be Eke-Ututu Market.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey discovered four shops where fertilisers, ammonium sulphate and electrical gadgets used in manufacturing explosives were packed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Uzodinma said the Captain, who led the operation, together with another officer, was currently lying critical at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.<\/p>\n

He further said that the soldiers recovered all the weapons and fertilisers used by the bandits<\/a> to manufacture IEDs.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the process, they burnt down shops and this is consistent with our policy.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, they were so tactful that no innocent life was lost.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were able to destroy all the shops, where the items were stored,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He expressed concern that rather than visit the scene to ascertain the true situation of the event, opposition candidates preferred to condemn the activities of security agencies.<\/p>\n

He said that some were so brazen to blackmail the security agencies, questioning why they should go there at all.<\/p>\n

He said that traders were not allowed into the market \u201cwithout paying taxes to unknown gunmen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are illegitimate taxes to enable people to open their shops. This is what we have been fighting all through,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The governor said that his administration would stop at nothing in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping in the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not politics. It is about the security of lives and property of our people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Uzondima assured that the state government will continue to support security agencies to work efficiently.<\/p>\n

The governor, who expressed regrets over the \u201ccollateral damage\u201d suffered during the raid, promised to replace and rebuild the market.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, when Eke-Ututu Market is destroyed to give Imo peace, the Government will also rebuild it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf in the process, there are innocent traders who lost their items, the government will work out compensation for them.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the government has a responsibility to fight crime,\u201d Uzodimma said.<\/p>\n

He urged community leaders, residents and visitors, with useful information on the bandits\u2019 hideouts to volunteer to help in their arrest.<\/p>\n

The governor said that the operation was exclusively executed by a combined team of the Nigerian Army, Navy, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Police.<\/p>\n
