{"id":219059,"date":"2022-09-29T06:02:40","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T05:02:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=219059"},"modified":"2022-09-29T06:02:40","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T05:02:40","slug":"coughing-three-year-old-dies-after-nurse-injections-in-lagos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/09\/29\/coughing-three-year-old-dies-after-nurse-injections-in-lagos\/","title":{"rendered":"Coughing three-year-old dies after nurse injections in Lagos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A three-year-old boy, David Nwogu, has died while receiving treatment at the Maternal and Child Hospital in the Ajah area of Lagos State.<\/p>\n<p>The victim, brought in by his parents on Friday, September 23, over cough and catarrh, died after receiving injections at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>In a video that went viral on Wednesday, the victim\u2019s mother, Loveth, stated that her son was hale and hearty before he was given the injections, which led to his death the next day.<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u201cI took my son to the hospital on Friday morning because he had cough and catarrh; he didn\u2019t have a fever or anything, it was just cough and catarrh. The catarrh actually started on Wednesday, but I took him to the hospital just to check for infections since he was about to start school on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey ran a test and said he had small pneumonia, infection and cold, but not malaria. They started treatment and I called my husband that day; he told me my son was no longer coughing and they said he might even be discharged from the hospital soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Saturday morning, a nurse gave him an injection aside from the ones initially given and he vomited everything he had eaten because he reacted to the drugs. Instead of the nurse to change the injection or even monitor him on what to do, she didn\u2019t do any of that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked my son later if he wanted to eat his cereal because he liked it, but he said no. He slept off and I woke him around 4am to eat again but he still didn\u2019t want to eat. I knew he would still eat before the day breaks because he would be hungry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAround 7am, the nurse came and said I should get him ready for another injection. I asked the nurse if he could eat his cereal first and immediately my son heard this, he also wanted to eat. But the nurse insisted that he should take the injection. I insisted again, but she remained adamant and gave him the injections. At the fourth injection, my son shouted, \u2018Mummy, daddy, my hand,\u2019 that was it. He went cold and died. I lost my son that day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Loveth told newsmen on Wednesday that the nurse who administered the injections disappeared after the incident.<\/p>\n<p>She noted that the family lawyers were already on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>While lamenting beside the boy\u2019s corpse in another video, the victim\u2019s father stated that the government hospital had already reported the incident at the Ogombo Police Station.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cI went to the Ogombo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/09\/28\/policeman-enforcing-okada-ban-shoots-security-guard-in-lagos\/\">Police<\/a> Station to report all that happened but I was told that they (the hospital) had already reported the incident. The DPO knew everything. All they have been saying here is autopsy; no one can explain what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, in a statement on Wednesday, commiserated with the family of the boy, adding that investigation into the incident had started.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cIt is pertinent to note that the management of the facility had also officially reported the incident to the ministry while investigation into the allegation and the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident has since commenced on a facility level.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cIn the same vein, I have also requested an independent investigation into the incident.
