{"id":219146,"date":"2022-09-29T15:37:29","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T14:37:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=219146"},"modified":"2022-09-29T15:37:29","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T14:37:29","slug":"ogun-court-dissolves-13-year-old-marriage-over-threat-to-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/09\/29\/ogun-court-dissolves-13-year-old-marriage-over-threat-to-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Ogun: Court dissolves 13-year-old marriage over threat to life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Ogun State Customary Court in Ake, Abeokuta, has dissolved the 13-year marriage of Ibrahim Idris and his wife, Shakirat.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA reports that the marriage was dissolved over an alleged threat to life.<\/p>\n<p>The husband, who lives in Adigbe, Abeokuta, had approached the court, alleging that his wife and her family members were threatening him whenever he had minor disagreements with her.<\/p>\n<p>Idris asked the court to end his relationship with his estranged wife, Shakirat, due to frequent fighting and the woman&#8217;s failure to properly care for their children.<\/p>\n<p>The father of four also accused his wife of publicly assaulting and embarrassing him on several occasions.<\/p>\n<p>According to the applicant, Shakirat took the children and packed them out of the house to her parent&#8217;s house for no apparent reason, while denying him access to the children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe got married in 2009. It all started in 2019 when I got home a particular day and I did not meet my wife. I called her and she told me she was in her parent\u2019s house in Ibadan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s fond of instigating her family members against me to the point that they have threatened my life,\u201d Idris said.<\/p>\n<p>It was gathered that Shakirat had not been coming to court.<\/p>\n<p>In her judgment, the President of the court, Mrs. A. O. Abimbola, found it proper for both parties to go their separate ways, since \u201cthe marriage had broken down irretrievably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abimbola said the court had no choice but to dissolve the marriage as the wife refused to appear before the court after being served of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/19\/my-wife-is-a-serial-criminal-man-begs-court-to-dissolve-10-year-old-marriage\/\">hearing notice<\/a> several times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe evidence of the petitioner remains uncontroverted. The petitioner said it was the respondent that moved out of the house herself and all efforts to reconcile them failed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe respondent came only once to this court but never came back to defend the suit. This confirms that she is no longer interested in the marriage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe evidence of the petitioner showed that dowry was paid, there were introduction and engagement. They also did a Nikah. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/07\/i-didnt-have-sex-for-6-years-because-ffk-could-not-perform-former-ministers-ex-wife-tells-court\/\">evidence<\/a> was not challenged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we have stated earlier, the reasons given for dissolution of marriage by the petitioner which were not controverted stand. The customary marriage between the parties; the petitioner, Idris Ibrahim and Idris Shakirat, the respondent is hereby dissolved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe custody of the children and maintenance are already before the Family Court, Isabo, Abeokuta, Ogun State,\u201d the court ruled.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Ogun State Customary Court in Ake, Abeokuta, has dissolved the 13-year marriage of Ibrahim Idris and his wife, Shakirat.
