{"id":219823,"date":"2022-10-03T06:58:39","date_gmt":"2022-10-03T05:58:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=219823"},"modified":"2022-10-03T06:58:39","modified_gmt":"2022-10-03T05:58:39","slug":"falana-to-cbn-disclose-details-of-proposed-polaris-bank-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/10\/03\/falana-to-cbn-disclose-details-of-proposed-polaris-bank-sale\/","title":{"rendered":"Falana to CBN: Disclose details of proposed Polaris Bank sale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Femi Falana, human rights lawyer, has implored the Central Bank Of Nigeria (CBN) to make public the \u201cdetailed information\u201d of the planned sale of Polaris Bank Nigeria Limited.<\/p>\n<p>An online report had claimed that CBN had commenced plans to \u201csecretly sell\u201d the bank for N40 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Polaris Bank later dismissed the report and further described it as \u201cintending to cause panic\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, in a letter dated August 25, 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/09\/19\/falana-slams-police-pro-for-saying-civilans-cant-retaliate-if-assaulted-by-officers\/\">Falana<\/a> who commended CBN\u2019s intervention on the bank\u2019s N1.2 trillion debt, demanded details of the proposed transaction, and the name of the buyer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe commend the Central Bank of Nigeria for bailing out Polaris Bank Nigeria Limited with the sum of N1.2 trillion,\u201d the letter reads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have however read in the People\u2019s Gazette online medium that the Central Bank has concluded arrangements to sell the Polaris Bank at a ridiculous sum of N40 billion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn view of the foregoing, kindly furnish us with detailed information on the proposed sale of the Polaris Bank Nigeria Limited including the name of the lucky buyer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs this request is made pursuant to the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2011, you are required to accede to our request within 7 days of the receipt of this letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Falana further warned that if CBN fails or refuses to provided the requested information, he would be forced to take the matter to court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake notice that if you fail or refuse to furnish us with the requested information we shall not to pray the Federal High Court to compel you to accede to our request,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, responding to the request in a separate letter dated September 1, 2022, the CBN said it will accede to Falana\u2019s request in due course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe write to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated the 25th of August 2022 and received on the 1st of September 2022 on the above subject and wish to inform you that the information being sought, where available, will be communicated to you in due course,\u201d the apex bank said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Femi Falana, human rights lawyer, has implored the Central Bank Of Nigeria (CBN) to make public the \u201cdetailed information\u201d of the planned sale of Polaris Bank Nigeria Limited.
