{"id":221025,"date":"2022-10-10T04:59:12","date_gmt":"2022-10-10T03:59:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=221025"},"modified":"2022-10-10T04:59:12","modified_gmt":"2022-10-10T03:59:12","slug":"no-sense-of-justice-it-was-politically-motivated-says-dariye-on-imprisonment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/10\/10\/no-sense-of-justice-it-was-politically-motivated-says-dariye-on-imprisonment\/","title":{"rendered":"No sense of justice&#8230; It was politically motivated, says Dariye on imprisonment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Joshua Dariye, former governor of Plateau state, says his conviction and imprisonment for N1.126bn fraud was devoid of fairness and justice. <\/p>\n<p>He made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television\u2019s Newsnight, a pre-recorded show which airs every Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Dariye, who was governor of Plateau between 1999 and 2007, said his travails were \u201cpolitically motivated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged Dariye over allegations of diverting N1.126 billion from the Plateau government\u2019s ecological fund.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2018, Adebukola Banjoko, judge of a federal capital territory (FCT) high court, \t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/08\/08\/fraud-fg-releases-nyame-dariye-from-prison\/\">sentenced Dariye to 14 years imprisonment.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A court of appeal in Abuja, in November 2018, reduced the sentence to 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>The supreme court also affirmed the conviction and the jail term of the appeal court in March 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the development, the former Plateau governor said as a chartered accountant, he would not have stolen in that manner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy issue was political in the sense that the same charge was taken to Kaduna high court, Justice Liman dismissed that case,\u201d he said in the interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were not happy, they carried the same document to the Plateau state house of assembly and the whole amount we are talking about is N1.1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe judge asked if Mr Dariye wanted to convert money into his personal use, will he use his letterhead and write the bank \u2018Pls distribute as follows?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am a chartered accountant and I wouldn\u2019t have been that foolish. If I wanted to steal, I would have lodged the money in commission and turnover but that never happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut because it was politically motivated, the other vehicle of prosecution \u2013 EFCC \u2013 became the only veritable tool. I don\u2019t think there was any sense of justice but I leave the rest to God. Time will tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In April, the council of state meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari pardoned Dariye and Jolly Nyame, former Taraba governor.<\/p>\n<p>The former governors were granted pardons on the grounds of age and ill health.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joshua Dariye, former governor of Plateau state, says his conviction and imprisonment for N1.126bn fraud was devoid of fairness and justice.
