Lucky Irabor, chief of defence staff (CDS), has warned state governors who are mulling procurement of automatic weapons for their security outfits to desist from doing so. <\/p>\n

Speaking during an interview with journalists after the national security council (NSC) meeting in Abuja on Friday, Irabor said state governors were not empowered to arm their security outfits with certain weapons. <\/p>\n

The meeting was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.<\/p>\n

While inaugurating the first batch of personnel of the state\u2019s security outfit in August, Ortom had said \u201csophisticated weapons\u201d would be provided for them.<\/p>\n

On his part, Rotimi Akeredolu<\/a>, governor of Ondo, in September, said the state will procure arms for operatives of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the development, Irabor said the licence for the procurement of automatic weapons \u2014 such as AK-47 \u2014 lies with the agencies of the federal government.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirearms fall into two major categories. You have the automatic weapons and the ones that we may classify as non-automatic weapons, which some of you may even have if you have the appropriate licences \u2014 talking about the pump action which are the very common ones, and sometimes even the dane guns some of the hunters use,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is involved in the class mentioned has to do with automatic weapons. There\u2019s no state that has been given licence for that.<\/p>\n
