{"id":222321,"date":"2022-10-17T06:26:50","date_gmt":"2022-10-17T05:26:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=222321"},"modified":"2022-10-17T06:26:50","modified_gmt":"2022-10-17T05:26:50","slug":"asuu-president-why-we-suspended-strike-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/10\/17\/asuu-president-why-we-suspended-strike-action\/","title":{"rendered":"ASUU president: Why we suspended strike action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Emmanuel Osodeke has stated that the main reason lecturers decided to resume teaching is because of a court order asking them to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">ASUU had been on strike since February 14 to press home the demand for improved funding for universities, a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">On October 7, the court of appeal sitting in Abuja ordered the union to call off its strike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The National Executive Council (NEC) of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/10\/15\/uniport-announces-marathon-exams-for-students-after-eight-month-asuus-strike\/\">ASUU<\/a> on Friday<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0announced a suspension of the industrial action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The union, however, said some of its issues remain unresolved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Speaking on Sunday when he featured on Channels TV\u2019s \u2018Sunday Politics\u2019, Osodeke said the union hopes that the government will do the needful now the strike has been suspended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He added that although there were interventions by Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house of representatives, \u201cthe major reason we are resuming is because we are obeying the court order\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe issues have not been fully resolved and no agreement has been signed. So, we are resuming because we are a law abiding body and we don\u2019t want to break the law. We are also hoping that the intervention of the speaker, as promised by him, will resolve these problems in a very short time,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When asked if this means the lecturers are not happy to be resuming, Osodeke said: \u201cDefinitely\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn trade dispute, especially one involving university <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/04\/court-restrains-finance-minister-from-reducing-salaries-of-doctors-in-academics\/\">academics<\/a>, the best option is negotiation and then you end it within a very short time,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBut the minister of labour believes that the best way is to force them to class. It\u2019s so sad, but because of the interest of the Nigerian students, their parents, and the speaker, our members will teach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAny country that plays with education creates room for insecurity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe want the next administration to follow the trend of neighbouring countries and allocate not less than 16 percent of the budget to education. When this is done, these problems will be sorted out.
