{"id":223148,"date":"2022-10-20T13:20:28","date_gmt":"2022-10-20T12:20:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=223148"},"modified":"2022-10-20T13:26:38","modified_gmt":"2022-10-20T12:26:38","slug":"nigeria-has-one-doctor-to-10000-patients-nma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/10\/20\/nigeria-has-one-doctor-to-10000-patients-nma\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria has one doctor to 10,000 patients \u2013 NMA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) said Nigeria has approximately one actively licensed physician caring for 10 thousands patients.<\/p>\n<p>The NMA President, Dr. Ojinmah Uche, explained that the ratio is derived from the about 24, 000 actively licensed physicians caring for over 200 million Nigerians as a result of brain drain in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Ojinmah stated this on Wednesday in Abuja during a policy dialogue on Nigeria\u2019s health sector brain drain and its implications for sustainable child and family health service delivery.<\/p>\n<p>The event was organised by the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in collaboration with the Partnership for Advancing Child and Family Health at Scale project of the development Research and Projects Centre.<\/p>\n<p>He said \u201cSo in eight years, USA produced and acquired (Brain drain) more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/09\/07\/over-2000-nigerian-doctors-left-for-europe-s-arabia-canada-in-6-months-official\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doctors<\/a> than Nigeria has produced from 1963-2021 (58 years).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe real shocker comes when you note that what was reflected by the USA record were \u201cactively licensed physicians\u201d not just those registered to practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this juncture, I leave to your imagination the number of actively licensed physicians in Nigeria relative to those registered to practice as stated above. Available data places it around 24,000 giving a horrible true ratio of approximately 1:10,000. This ratio of 1:10,000 is a national average but in most states, the situation is palpably worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly one doctor is incredibly available to treat 30, 000 patients in some states in the south, while states in the North are as worse as one doctor to 45,000 patients. In some rural areas, patients have to travel more than 30 kilometers from their abodes to get medical attention where available thus making access to healthcare a rarity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on WHO established minimum threshold, a country needs a mix of 23 doctors, nurses and midwives per 10,000 Population to deliver essential maternal and child health services.
