{"id":223339,"date":"2022-10-21T06:49:11","date_gmt":"2022-10-21T05:49:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=223339"},"modified":"2022-10-21T06:49:11","modified_gmt":"2022-10-21T05:49:11","slug":"military-destroys-23-illegal-refineries-apprehends-42-oil-thieves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/10\/21\/military-destroys-23-illegal-refineries-apprehends-42-oil-thieves\/","title":{"rendered":"Military destroys 23 illegal refineries, apprehends 42 oil thieves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the last two weeks, &#8220;Operation Delta Safe&#8221; troops discovered and destroyed 23 illegal refining sites and apprehended 42 suspected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/09\/22\/troops-arrest-17-oil-thieves-in-the-south-south-zone\/\">oil thieves<\/a> in the Niger Delta.<\/p>\n<p>Major General Musa Danmadami, Director, Defence Media Operations, announced this on Thursday in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>He spoke at the bi-weekly news briefing on the operations of the Nigerian Armed Forces.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Danmadami said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Troops also conducted patrols and buggy operations in the zone during which several illegal refineries, storage tanks, wooden boats, coking ovens, dug out pits were destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>Cumulatively, within the two weeks in review, troops discovered and destroyed 23 illegal refining sites, 87 wooden boats, seven speed boats, 284 storage tanks, 160 coking ovens, three fibre boats and 18 dugout pits.<\/p>\n<p>Troops also recovered 2.5 litres of crude oil, 133,824 litres of diesel and 7,000 litres of kerosene.<\/p>\n<p>Also recovered were 16 tankers, one vessel, eight pumping machines, and two motorcycles.<\/p>\n<p>Forty-two criminals were arrested during the operations.<\/p>\n<p>All recovered items and apprehended criminals were handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Danmadami said the troops continued to sustain aggressive patrols to curb crude oil theft and illegal bunkering within the Nigeria maritime environment to ensure the economic prosperity of the country.<\/p>\n<p>He said the troops nabbed three suspected oil thieves who were tracked and monitored to Adige, Urhiakpa and Mission Road in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State on October 6.<\/p>\n<p>It was during the execution of \u201cOperation Octopus Grip\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>On October 7, the troops also impounded a vessel, MT DEIMA, with a capacity of 1500 tonnes of crude oil, for illegal bunkering in the Sara area of the Escravos Channel.<\/p>\n<p>The eight crew members of the ship were apprehended.<\/p>\n<p>Danmadami stated that the vessel had six tank compartments containing unspecified crude oil.<\/p>\n<p>He also stated that troops and other security agencies had not relented in their efforts to combat criminal elements in the South East zone.<\/p>\n<p>On October 7, troops from Operation AWATSE, as well as operatives from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, destroyed 15 hectares of Indian hemp in Mabu village, Ogun State.<\/p>\n<p>He added that troops also recovered 258 bags of 50kg smuggled rice, 220 jerry cans of 30 litres of petrol, and four vehicles in the South West, as well as arresting two criminals and rescuing two civilians.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAll recovered items, apprehended criminals and rescued civilians were handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action,\u201d<\/em> Danmadami said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the last two weeks, &#8220;Operation Delta Safe&#8221; troops discovered and destroyed 23 illegal refining sites and apprehended 42 suspected oil thieves in the Niger Delta.
