{"id":223349,"date":"2022-10-21T07:32:31","date_gmt":"2022-10-21T06:32:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=223349"},"modified":"2022-10-21T07:32:31","modified_gmt":"2022-10-21T06:32:31","slug":"we-have-put-policies-in-place-to-tackle-naira-depreciation-says-cbn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/10\/21\/we-have-put-policies-in-place-to-tackle-naira-depreciation-says-cbn\/","title":{"rendered":"We have put policies in place to tackle naira depreciation, says CBN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has stated that it has established policies to address the persistent depreciation of the naira.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The local currency currently exchanges N440\/$1 at the official market but N751\/1$ at the parallel market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This was made known on Thursday by\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Osita Nwanisobi, director of the apex bank\u2019s corporate communications during a virtual media briefing at the end of the bankers\u2019 committee\u2019s meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is coming few days after the<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON) criticised the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> foreign exchange policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/10\/20\/cbn-amcon-sell-polaris-bank-to-scil\/\">(CBN)<\/a> for adversely impacting the naira stability across all markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to the association, the apex bank\u2019s policy created a huge gap between official and parallel market rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Speaking with journalists, Nwanisobi said the policies of the apex bank are aimed at boosting foreign exchange inflows to meet citizens\u2019 demands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While responding to a question on the possibility of the naira falling to N1,000 per dollar at the parallel market before December, he said, \u201cThe CBN has put policies in places such as the RT200 FX programme and Naira 4 dollar scheme. These are the measures. If there is a need to adopt more policies, the central bank will not shy away from that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Also speaking at the briefing, Ireti Samuel-Ogbu, managing director of Citibank Nigeria, said $1.28 billion was repatriated at the end of the third quarter of the year (Q3) under the RT200 FX programme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Out of this amount, she said $870 million was sold on the investors\u2019 and exporters\u2019 (I &amp;E) FX window.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She added that during the period under review, eligible non-oil exporters received N42 billion as rebates for the period.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has stated that it has established policies to address the persistent depreciation of the naira.
