{"id":224623,"date":"2022-10-26T22:21:39","date_gmt":"2022-10-26T21:21:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=224623"},"modified":"2022-10-26T22:21:39","modified_gmt":"2022-10-26T21:21:39","slug":"why-cbn-is-redesigning-naira-notes-emefiele","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/10\/26\/why-cbn-is-redesigning-naira-notes-emefiele\/","title":{"rendered":"Why CBN is redesigning Naira notes \u2013 Emefiele"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mr. Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), stated that the proposed redesign of the Naira will have a positive impact on its value.<\/p>\n<p>Emefiele stated this while announcing the apex bank&#8217;s plans to begin issuing redesigned N200, N500, and N1,000 denominations on December 15.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, while this is not the primary reason for changing the currency, it may be one of its benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Emefiele stated that the decision was influenced by significant hoarding of banknotes by members of the public, a worsening shortage of clean and fit banknotes, and an increase in cases and risk of counterfeiting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStatistics show that more than 85 per cent of currency in circulation are outside the vaults of our commercial banks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs at the end of September, N2.7 trillion out of the N3.23 trillion currencies in circulation was outside the vaults of commercial banks across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvidently, currency in circulation has more than doubled since 2015 rising from N1.46 trillion as at Dec. 2015, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/12\/group-to-emefiele-contest-2023-presidency\/\">N3.23 trillion<\/a> as at Sept. 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a worrisome trend that cannot continue to be allowed, \u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Emefiele, recent developments in photography technology and advancement in printing devices have also made counterfeiting of the Naira relatively easier.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the apex bank was determined to arrest the situation forthwith.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn recent times, the CBN has recorded significantly higher cases of counterfeiting, especially at the higher denominations of N500 and N1,000 banknotes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough, global best practice is for central banks to redesign, produce and circulate new legal tenders every five to eight years, our existing series of banknotes has not been redesigned in the last 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CBN remains resolutely determined to achieve the objective of its mandate as enshrined in the CBN Act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is, therefore, no longer tenable to continue with business as usual, especially given the continually evolving circumstances that could impede the optimal performance of our Naira,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the step taken by the CBN to redesign the Naira would also help deepen the drive to entrench a cashless economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be complemented by increased minting of the eNaira. This will further reign in on currency outside the banking system into the banking system, thus making monetary policy more efficacious,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the step would also help to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/17\/covid-19-cbn-disbursed-3trn-loans-to-nigerians-businesses-emefiele\/\">check crimes<\/a> like terrorism and kidnapping.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccess to large volumes of money outside the banking system used as source of ransome would begin to dry up \u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mr. Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), stated that the proposed redesign of the Naira will have a positive impact on its value.
