{"id":226168,"date":"2022-11-02T07:39:07","date_gmt":"2022-11-02T06:39:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=226168"},"modified":"2022-11-02T07:39:07","modified_gmt":"2022-11-02T06:39:07","slug":"our-theatre-of-operations-has-expanded-army-chief-calls-for-more-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/11\/02\/our-theatre-of-operations-has-expanded-army-chief-calls-for-more-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Our theatre of operations has expanded&#8217; &#8211; Army chief calls for more funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chief of army staff, Faruk Yahaya has stated that the Nigerian army needs more funding to sustain its operations across the country.<\/p>\n<p>This was made known on Tuesday by Yahaya when he appeared<span class=\"s1\"> before the house of representatives committee<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> on army to defend the army\u2019s 2023 budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">He said the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">proposal \u201cwas prepared based on the need to sustain the tempo and the fight against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/11\/01\/tinubu-will-end-boko-haram-iswap-insurgency-in-six-months-shettima\/\">insurgency<\/a>\u201d and other violent crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He said the army has been involved in internal security operations across the six geo-political zones with varying intensities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to him, the Nigerian Army has developed processes and tactics to overwhelm enemies in kinetic and non-kinetic battles.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He said the army has also evolved strategies to win the heart and minds of the local population and safeguard the nation\u2019s integrity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This effort, he says, requires investment \u201cin our personnel welfare, leadership capacity building, procurement of necessary equipment, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/10\/08\/zainab-ahmed-2-3tn-needed-to-resolve-infrastructure-challenges\/\">infrastructure<\/a> which are hinged on adequate funding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAs you are all aware, the theatre of operations has expanded beyond the north-east to other geo-political zones,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThus, the manpower requirements of the Nigerian army have also increased to accommodate this attendant needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThat Nigerian army is implementing Nigerian army order of battle 2026 in phases has led to the expansion of the Nigerian army from five to eight divisions force structure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis, therefore, calls for a review of the current envelop budgeting system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe envelop system leads to inadequate funding of the Nigerian army for the performance of its constitutional duties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI hope this committee will passionately look into this to correct it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Yahaha asked the lawmakers to facilitate passage of the armed forces of Nigeria trust fund bill before the end of their tenure, adding that it will benefit army through improved funding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In his remarks, Abdulrazak Namdas, chairman of the committee, said the army should put \u201cenough boots\u201d on the ground to prevent security threats in the nation\u2019s capital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAs we sit here and deliberate on this budget proposals, Abuja is under serious tension following a security alert issued in certain\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">quarters suggesting that terrorists may launch a major attack on the city,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chief of army staff, Faruk Yahaya has stated that the Nigerian army needs more funding to sustain its operations across the country.
